Application January 12, 1938, Serial No. 184,639
3 Claims.
This invention relates to containers and has as one of its objects to provide a simple form of container having a cover that may be hermetically sealed to the body.
Another aim is to provide acontainer for liquids having a removable cover easily attached and detached, the joint therebetween supplied with a packing ring, compressed between concentrically serrated surfaces, preventing the passage of air and moisture.
A further purpose is in the provision of means that prevent accidental removal of the cover by handling or during transit.
These advantageous objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential component of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a partial side elevational, partial longitudinal sectional view of the preferred form of a container made. in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1, part of the cover being broken away to show the construction. 7
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing a modification of body and cover flange construction.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
In the drawing the numeral 15 designates generally a conventional type of container composed of a cylindrical wall l6 having an angularly out reaching flange I! provided on its upper surface with a plurality of concentric serrations I8 preferably having sharp edges like saw teeth.
Extending inwardly from the wall, at about the junction of the flange H, are a series of interrupted arcuate ledges I9 widely spaced between their ends 20 for a purpose that will later become apparent.
A cover 25, preferably dome shaped, is provided with a raised annular ring 26 blending into an outturned flange 21, corresponding with the flange I1, and provided with concentric serrations 28, similar to the serrations l8, but arranged in staggered or offsetrelation with respect to their sharp angular edges.
A re-enforcing rib 30 on the upper side of the cover serves the purpose of a handle, while other shorter ribs 3| are used as stiifeners. A series of spaced notches 32 present convenient means for manually rotating the cover.
Extending outwardly from the edge of the cover, below the ring 26, are, a series of arcuate lugs 33 adapted to pass through the spaces between the ledges IS in the manner of a bayonet lock joint, and, as will be readily understood, these lugs and ledges are relatively inclined, camlike or wedge shaped on their contacting surfaces.
A flexible packing ring 35 is placed on the serrated flange surface l8 and compressed by the teeth 28 of the cover flange to constitute an impervious joint, when the cover is in a locked position on the body of the container, and may be secured against incidental loosening by reason of a pin 36 having pointed ends 3'! bent at substantially right angles and adapted to pass through perforations 38 in the cover flange 21. A depression 39 in the cover flange permits the pin to be easily inserted or removed.
In the modification shown in Figure 4 the body flange l'l' extends outwardly at a right angle, and correspondingly, the cover flange 21' is similarly disposed, the structure in other respects being as previously described.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting with the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimedas new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a container having a 35 body portion and manually removable ribbed cover, of an annularly serrated integral flange on said body portion extending angularly outward, and an annularly serrated flange on said cover, the serrations in staggered relation to said serrations on the body portion, arcuate ledges on said body portion, arcuate lugs on said cover to register with the arcuate ledges on the body portion when the cover is in a normally closed position, means on the cover to facilitate its rotation, tenacious material interposed between said flanges to form an air-impervious joint between the flange of the body portion and flange of the cover, a double pointed pin inserted through the cover and tenacious material to prevent accidental rotation of the cover and means in said cover to facilitate removal of said pin.
2. A container comprising a cylindrical body having a circumambient flange on its upper edge, a dome-shaped cover having a corresponding flange containing pairs of spaced perforations, said flanges having sharp corrugations disposed concentrically on their proximate surfaces, a thick flat packing ring intermediate the corrugations of said flanges, interrupted ledges on the interior of said body interjacent its flange, lugs on said cover co-operative with said ledges, radial ribs on said cover connecting its raised central portion and flange, and wires having angularly bent sharply pointed ends to pass through pairs of the cover perforations and engage said ring.
3. A container comp-rising a cylindrical body having an annularly serrated flange on its upper portion, a manually removable ribbed cover of arcuate cross section level along its top and having a correspondingly serrated flange, said flanges both extending angularly upward and outward, arcuate ledges in said body, arcuate lugs on said cover to register with the body ledges when said cover is closed, said cover flange having a notched upper edge to facilitate its operation and a series of paired perforations, a gasket interposed between said flanges, and a pin having prongs to pass through one of the pairs of cover perforations and enter said gasket, said cover recessed between adjacent perforations to facilitate removal of said pin.
