Cl. 107-14 This invention broadly relates to dispensing means for non-flowing matter from congealing devices or chambers such as disclosed in applicants Patent No. 2,576,995, issued December 4, 1951, for Agitating and Scraping Mechanisms employed in such devices.
In processing food matter it is highly important that all parts of these devices be so constructed that they can be readily and thoroughly cleaned. For that reason a dispensing structure for congeal'ing chambers, such as disclosed in the above-mentioned application, must be simple and readily separable from the chamber and must have all of its parts accessible and so designed that any food matter which may lodge in any of its parts can be removed without difiiculty.
For sanitary reasons and to provide access to the interior, congealing chambers of the type indicated usually are provided with removable ends. One of the ends is preferably equipped with some means for dispensing the congealed food matter from the chamber. Due to the fact that such congealed food matter will not flow readily, it must be placed under slight, but sufiicient pressure to effect its discharge. Dispensing of such food matter must be of course controlled, and controllable dispensing means must be simple and also readily accessible for cleansing purposes.
It is the intent and prime object of this invention to provide a relatively simple, inexpensive but elfective combination end cover and dispensing control means for congealing chambers which can be readily attached to and removed from such chamber, and which can be easily cleansed in a most thorough manner so as to prevent any food matter from clinging to any parts of the device through which food matter is to pass.
Another object of this invention is the combination with a specially designed end-annulus for a congealing chamber, of a one-piece combination end cover and dispensing control structure consisting of a disc-like body having a central boss extending from one, its interior face, and a valve housing extending from its other, exterior face and forming an integral part of that body, said valve housing being located beneath the horizontal center plane of the congealing chamber, and wherein a downwardly inclined passage is provided from the face of the boss into the valve housing, and in which housing is operatively mounted a handle-equipped, conical valve having a central vertical bore open at the bottom end of the valve and a side bore, the latter being adapted to provide connection between said inclined passage and the central bore of the valve, and wherein the lower end of the valve is reduced and is externally threaded for the reception of a dispensing tip, the latter having an internally threaded cylindrical upper end provided with meaas for facilitating the attachment of the tip to and its removal from the valve, the lower end of the tip forming a hollow conical, downwardly reducing outlet, the top end of its interior passage being substantially larger in area than that of the valve bore, while the discharging end of the tip is of a substantially smaller area than that bore, whereby the food matter to be dispensed is first permitted 'to expand under reduced pressure condition as it leaves the valvebore, and then "is brought under higher pressure as it is forced through the lower tip 'end at increased velocity, thus greatly facilitating the correct filling of containers "in which the dispensed matter is to be served.
The foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the present device will become more fully understood from the ensuing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

In Fig. 1 there is disclosed one end of a congealing chamber 10 which comprises an outer cylinder 11, an inner cylinder 12, joined at their ends by a cylindrical flange 13, extending from annulus 14 which is provided with a central recess 15 and annular abutment or sealing rings 16 and 17 concentric with the recess. Operative within chamber 10 is an agitating and scraping mechanism 18 mounted on a-square shaft 19, the rounded end 20 of which projects beyond annulus 14.
Removably secured to annulus 14 is a one-piece combination and cover and dispensing control structure 21, composed of a disc 22, from one, the inner face of which extends a central boss 23 adapted for engagement and tight fit with recess '15 of flange 14. The provision of central boss 23 causes the formation of an annular flange with a flat surface 24 which is adapted to engage sealing rings 16 and 17 extending from flange '14. Thus a firm, air-tight union is -eifected between boss 23 and recess 15 and between face 23 of the disc and rings 16 and 17. Provided at the center of disc '22 is a bearing hole or journal 25 for the reception of shaft end 20. The outer end of the journal is closed by a cap 26 which is frictionally held within the journal.
Extending from the other, the outer face of disc 22 and forming an integral part thereof is a valve housing 27 which consists of a housing proper 28 and a connection piece 29, both being disposed below the horizontal center plane passing through journal 25. Valve housing proper 28 is substantially cone shaped, tapering from the top towards the bottom. The conical hollow interior of the housing is connected with freezing chamber 10 by a downwardly biased passage 30 which extends from the 1 face of boss 23. The valve housing is located beneath the horizontal central plane passing through chamber 19.
Operative in the valve housing is a hollow conical valve 31, provided at its upper end with a handle 32 and having a reduced lower end 33 which is threaded externally. The body of the valve is bored axially at 34 and from which bore extends a horizontal bore 35, elfecting connection with passage 30 when the valve is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Bore 34 is open at the bottom end only.
Removably secured to the threaded lower end 33 of the valve is a dispensing tip 36 consisting of an internally threaded cylindrical upper portion 37 and a hollow conical lower portion 38, which latter is serrated as at 39 in the form of an inverted crown, having a plurality of downwardly directed, relatively broad prongs 40. At the exterior of cylindrical portion 37 there are provided radially arranged grip holes 41 for facilitating the attachmeat and removal of the dispensing tip. It will be noted from Fig. 1 that the upper end of the conical passage of the tip is substantially larger in diameter than the diameter of bore 34. It will be also noted that the outlet passage defined by a horizontal plane passing through the upper termini of prongs 40 is substantially smaller than the area of bore 34. In consequence of this construction there is formed between the lower end of bore 34 and the upper termini of the prongs an abruptly enlarging chamber which serves for permitting a temporary expansion of matter discharging through bore 34, whereby the pressure at which the matter moves from congealing chamber becomes abruptly reduced. But when the matter reaches the smaller outlet of the dispensing tip, the material to be dispensed is caused to leave at a substantially increased pressure and speed. This facilitates a more efficient filling of containers in which the dispensed matter is to be served in that the formation of air traps is prevented.
The attachment of cover 21 is eifected by means of studs 42 shown in Fig. 4, one end 43 of which is held within flange 14 while the other end projects through one of two symmetrically arranged apertures in disc 22, disposed in the horizontal center plane passing through journal 25, and is engaged by a tightening nut 44, provided with abutment collar 45 and knob 46, which latter is equipped with grip holes 47 for facilitating tightening or removal of the nut. Studs 42 are disposed in the horizontal center plane passing through journal 25 for shaft end 20.
By the use of studs 42 and nuts 44 the entire one-piece combination cover and dispensing control structure can be either attached or removed in respect to congealing chamber 10. When thus detached the valve structure, including the valve body and the dispensing tip, may be readily dis-assembled and cleansed and thereupon again re-assembled for re-attachment to the chamber.
In practice, all of the parts of the combination end cover and dispensing control structure are intended to be sterilized, and for that reason the material from which the parts are made, including studs 42 and nuts 44, are preferably of corrosion-resisting metal.
It will be noted from Fig. 1 that the top edge of dispensing tip 36 is flat and engages the flat lower edge of valve housing 28 whereby a tight connection between these two parts is effected.
While in the foregoing a specific arrangement of the one-piece combination end cover and dispensing control structure is described, which is intended to serve in connection with a congealing chamber such as disclosed in the aforementioned application, it is quite obvious that changes and improvements may become necessary when that structure is to be employed with similar but differently constructed congealing drums or chambers, for which reason such necessary changes and improvements are deemed to reside within the scope of the present invention as set forth in the annexed claim. What is claimed as new is:
The combination with an annulus forming the end support for two concentric cylinders constituting a con gealing chamber in which operates a centrally disposed shaft supporting a scraping and agitating mechanism, of a one-piece structure forming a combination closure for the chamber, an end bearing for the shaft and a valvecontrolled dispensing unit, and wherein said one-piece structure constitutes a flange formation adapted for concentric association with said annulus and a valve housing forming a part of the dispensing unit and extending beyond said flange formation, the latter having a central bore forming the end bearing for the shaft, and wherein a downwardly biased passage is provided in the flange formation and connects the interior of the congealing chamber with said valve housing, and wherein said val e housing has a conical interior, a conical valve body Operative therein and having a downwardly opening central passage, a horizontal passage in said valve body connecting its central passage with said downwardly biased passage provided in said flange formation, and wherein the lower end of said valve body extends beyond said valve housing, and a dispensing tip in substantially the shape of an inverted crown removably associated with that lower end of said valve body, the diameter of the upper end of said inverted crown being substantially larger than the diameters of the lower end thereof and the central passage in said valve body.
