COLLAR- jT FFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,435, dated March 8, 1898. Application filed November 12, 1896. Serial No. 611,877. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ONAS G. MATTELIN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in buttons, and has more particular relation to co1lar-buttons.
The object of my invention is to provide a button that will readily pass through a buttonhole without tearing it and be capable of such adjustment that after being so passed through it will not accidentally become displaced.
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a button embodying my invention, the head of the same being turned in line with the stud or shank. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through the same, and Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of said button with the head turned at right angles to the shank or stud.
A in the drawings represents the base-plate, B the shank or stud, and C the movable head. The said shank or stud B is preferably elliptical in horizontal section and is either attached to said plate A or cast or stamped integral therewith. The ends of said shank or stud are curved or concaved vertically, so as to form a reduced portion on said shank in which the material of the collar-band and collar will lie when the button is applied in position. Said head C is so constructed as to normally form a continuation of the said shank B and is rounded upon its upper edges, so as to pass easily through a buttonhole. This head is provided with a pin 0, that passes loosely through the shank B and plate A and is headed at its lower end to prevent thesaid head C rising off the top of the shank B.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that when the head C is turned into alinement with the shank B the said button may be readily forced through a buttonhole and the said head C then turned at right angles to the shank B, thus firmly locking the button in position and preventing its Withdrawal until the said head is again turned into alinement with the shank. The friction between the pin 0 and the passage through which it adjusted position against accidental displacement.
It will also be observed that the elliptical shape of the shank and head approximates that of an ordinary buttonhole and will permit of said head and shank being forced through the same without in any wise tearing the corners thereof. When this collarbutton is once applied in position, the concave edges of the shank B tend to hold the collar-band or collar firmly in position upon said shank and away from the head C, thus forming an additional means of security. The head 0 has a base contour adapted to exactly meet the outer termination of the said shank and form with the latter an unbroken continuation, the opposite sides of said head being complex and converging toward the uppertermination of the same.
This button is very simple and cheap in construction and operation and is so formed that it is next to impossible to break the same when in common use no matter what amount of pressure is exerted upon it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a button, the combination of a base-plate provided with a shank of approximately an elliptical shape in cross horizontal section and having vertical concave edges and also an aperture extending therethrough and through the center of the base, a head movably mounted on said shank having a base contour adapted to exactly meet the outer termination of said shank and form an unbroken conpasses is suiiicient to hold the head 0 in any I tinuation of the opposite sides and edges In testimony whereof I have signed this thereof, the opposite sides of said head being specification in the presence of two subscribconvex and converging toward the upper terting Witnesses.
mination of the same, and a pin secured to JONAS G. MATTELIN. the head and extending through the shank, Witnesses: said pin being upset against the rear of the O. vMALM,
base, substantially as described. S. A. SANVALL.
