SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,665, dated February 8, 1898.` Application filed February 1, 1897. Serial No. 621,410. (No model.)

of Prussia and German Empire, have invent-` ed certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device which will lit the bung-hole and receive the bung of a barrel and which will cover the same to protect it from injury or damage while being handled, and also to provide a sufficiently secure temporary closure of the bung-opening without the use of a bung or when the barrel is empty or when the bung is but loosely placed therein.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional elevation in line 0c of Fig. 2, illustrating my invention with the cap turned to uncover the cover-fastening device; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation of my invention similar to Fig. l, with the cover connection slightly modiiied and with the capturned to cover said cover connection; Fig. Il, a plan view similar to Fig. 2, with the cap removed and shown by dot-lines and with the modifications of cover connection as shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5, aplan view of the cover detached; and Fig. 6, a plan view of the bung-thimble and a fragment of the barrel, as in Figs. 2 and 3,'with the cap and cover both removed.
A conical sheet-metal shell or bung-socket A has an outer flange a, which bears snugly against the outer face of the barrel-head, and an inner flange a', which is turned down by suitable means to bear closely against the inner face of said barrel-head, thus providing a suitable socket for a bung B, which is shaped to tightly iit therein, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3 of the drawings.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the outer iiange a of the socket has rectangular notches d2 therein, and the head of the barrel has recesses below said notches to receive fastenings for securing a coverplate C thereto, which covers the outerend of Vthe bung-hole and also the end of the bung to protect it and hold it in place. The fastening shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings consists of two turn-buttons E, one upon each side of the cover-plate A, each having a shank e, which passes through a hole in the outer flange c of the cover-plate and has a head e upon its outer end to receive and be turned by a key, and has upon its inner end a cam-plate e2, which is turned lengthwise of the notch a2 when the cover-plate O is to be unlocked and disconnected from the bung-socket and which is turned crosswise Within the notches a2 in the head of the beer-barrel to engage with the sides of the notches co2 in the iiange of the bung-socket, and thus hold the coverplate securely in place thereon and admit of its being easily detached therefrom.
The cover-plate O may be secured at one side only by the turn-button E, the other side of said cover-plate being provided with a hinge-lug c2, which engages with a slot and rim-strip a3 upon the outer Iiange a of the `bung-socket, as shown in Figs. 3, 1l, 5, and 6 of the drawings, by which means the coverplate may be opened or closed over the end of the bung or bung-hole. The last described is the improved and preferred mode of coverfastening.
On the under side of the cover-plate C is arranged a packing D, which presses against the bung, Vand between the surfaces of the packing and the bung there may be placed a disk or sheet F of impervious material, the packing D being sufliciently elastic to hold said disk securely in place. A cap H is secured to the cover-plate O by a center rivet h, loosely fitted therein, which will allow the said cap H to be turned thereon, the rim of the said cap H being dished to cover the rim of the cover-plate and its connections and having rectangular notches therein arranged diametrically opposite each other to uncover the fastenings of the cover plate when placed yopposite said fastenings, and which may be turned half-round, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, to cover over said fastenings to both conceal and protect them. The elasticity of the metal of the cap H is sufficient to hold the said cap in position IOO I Wherever placed. The cap H may have peripheral sections cut therefrom at h h2, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4, which will alloW said cover to be opened and may be either square or of any suitable shape, and instead of pivoting the cap centrally it may be pivoted eccentrically upon the cover-plate.
When a barrel-head is provided with the above-described device, the bung mayv be easily held in place Without being driven tight and Without danger of being lost.
I claim as myinvention and desireto secure by Letters Patentl. An improved bung-closure for barrels, comprising a bung-hole having a thimble fitted therein provided with an outer flange, the latter having a notch and slot placed respectively diametrically upon opposite sides thereof, a cover-plate having a hinge-lug to connect with said slot and a turn-button fastening secured to the cover upon the opposite side to engage With the notch thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a bung-closure, the combination with l the thimble of a cover-plate, fastenings secured thereto diametrically .opposite each other and a cap pivotally supported upon said cover-plate and provided with oppositely-disposed notches to optionally cover or uncover said fastenings, substantially as described.
3. In a bung-closure for barrels, a thimble permanently secured to the barrel, a bung, a cover-plate secured to the thimble by fastening devices arranged upon opposite sides thereof, an elastic packing held beneath the cover, a sheet or disk of impervious material held between the bung and the elastic packing-disk and a cap-plate of a greater diameter than the cover pivotally secured thereto, substantially as described.
