BIaaDSTEAD.n
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 598,606, dated February 8,
Application tiled August 2 7, l 8 9 7.
`To oaZZ wiz/0m t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND SCHWEIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county ofPassaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a bedstead neat in appearance,of simple, strong, and durable construction, and which bedstead can be easily taken apart and put together and in which unnecessary corners or recesses are avoided, to thus prevent the breeding of vermin, such as bedbugs, dac.
The invention consists in the improved bedstead and in the combination and arrangements of the various parts, substantially as finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of. a bedstead provided with my improvements; Fig. 2, an enlarged central horizontal section of one of its side rails, partly broken away, and also illustrating` the adjoining portions of the head and foot boards; and Fig. 3, a front elevation ofthe parts shown in Fig. 2.
In said drawings, a represents the head and l) the foot board, provided with the posts a and b', respectively, as of the usual construction. The side rails c c are connected with the posts a a and ZJ b by means of hinges in a manner hereinafter described. Each of said side rails c is provided at one end with a curved recess c', while its other end is rounded olf, as `at c2, to provide as large a space as is practicable between the ends of said side rails c and their adjoining posts without impairing the strength of the bedstead. To the recessed end of each side rail c and adjoining its recessed portion are secured the straps e e, in alinement with the butts e3 e3 on the post a and removably secured together by pins e0 e0, thus furnishing a hinged connection between the side rails c and their respective posts a'.
On each side of the center line and on the Serial No. 649,694. (No model.)
rounded end c2 of each side rail c are secured. the straps e c, connected by a pin c2 with the butts e4 e4, which latter are secured on the post b', as clearly illustrated in the drawings. At or nearthe lower inner portion of each side rail c is arranged a strip provided at certain intervals with recesses adapted to receive and hold in position the ends of the slats d, as in the usual and well-known manner.
It will be manifest that no recesses are required in the posts a b asin bedsteads of ordinary construction, and on account ol" the side rails c being connected to said posts by means of loose pin-hinges the parts constituting the bedstead can be easily and readily taken apart for cleaningpurposes. Moreover, a certain space is left between the ends of the side rails c c and posts a b', thereby avoiding` unnecessary corners or, recesses wherein vermin of any description may be harbored, as will be manifest.'
It must be remarked that the rounded-off portions of the side rails are arranged adjacent to the footboard, thus allowing the bedsheet, quilt, and bedspread to be conveniently placed oversaid rounded portions, thus avoiding the necessity of tucking said bed sheet, quilt, and spread into the corners formed by the footboard and side rails of the bedstead.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isfq 1. As a new article of manufacture, a side rail for a bedstead having that end which is to be placed adjacent to the headboard provided with a central curved recess,- while the end which is to be placed adjacent to the footboard is rounded off, substantially as and for the purposes described. j
2. The combination with the posts of the head and foot boards of a bedstead, of vside rails removably connected with said posts, each of said side rails being provided at the end adjacent to the headboard with a central recess, while the end adjacent to the footboard is rounded off, and loose pin-hinges secured to said side rails and posts respectively, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination with the posts of the head and foot boards of a bedstead, of side Ico rails removably connected With said posts, each of said side rails being provided at the end adjacent to the headboard With a central recess, While the end adjacent to the foot- 5 board is rounded off, straps secured to the recessed ends of said side rails and on each side of its recessed portion, butts on the posts of the headboard and in alineinent With said straps, pins removably connecting said straps xo and butts, and loose pin-hinges secured to the rounded ends of said side rails and to the posts of the footboard respectively, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of I5 August, 1897.
FERDINAND SCHWEIZER.
