COUCH.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented muy' si, from.
Application tiled February 7, 1914. Serial No. 817,144.
T0 all whom 'it may concern Be it known that l, FREDERICK l?. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couches, 'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to couch-beds, that is to a device adapted to serve either as a couch or as a bed. The object of my invention is the production of a device of the character mentioned which will be of simple and economical construction; one which may be readily and easily converted from a couch to a bed or vice-versa; one adapted to accommodate the bed clothing when the device is used as a couch; and one which will be of pleasing and finished appearance. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
rlhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
ylhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of a device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section taken on substantially line aeof Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 is a section taken on line g/-y of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a frame which consists of legs 1 which are rigidly connected 'together by longitudinal rails 2 and 2 and transverse rails 3 and 3. The longitudinal rails are connected together intermediate their ends by a reinforcing bar 4, and reinforcing blocks 5 and 6 are provided at the corners at the head and foot respectively of the frame to serve as a further means of producing a firm and rigid construction. Removably arranged in a frame thus formed is the bottom member of the couch consisting of a main section 7 and a supplemental section 8, said sections 7 and 8 being hingedly connected at 8. Each of said sections is of resilient construction, comprising, as shown, a rigid peripheral angle iron frame and a resilient woven wire central portion. The section 7 is removably supported in position by supporting strips 9 arranged at the inner sides of longitudinal rails 2 and 2 and foot rail 8, the head end of said section being supported upon the cross bar 4.
The pivotal connection between the sections 7 and 8, as above described, permits of section 8 assuming either an upwardly in'- clined position asv shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and which is the position thereof when the device is used as a couch, or a lowered horizontal position coplanar with the section 7 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 which is the position thereof when the device is used as a bed, it being clear that when said section is in lowered position, a continuous flat horizontal bed vbottom is constituted by sections 7 and 8. The section 8 is releasably supported in inclined position by arms 10 pivoted at their upper ends to said section, the lower free ends of said arms being adapted to engage notches 11 provided in the upper' sides of cleats provided at the inner sides of rails 2 and 2. A plurality of notches 11 is provided for cooperation with each of the arms 10 in order to permit of the section 8 being supported in various inclined' positions as will be readily understood. When it is desired to completely lower the section 8 to horizontal position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l the free ends of arms 10 are disengaged from notches 11 and said section lowered to position upon corner blocks 5 which serve as supports therefor.
Formed in the frame of the device under section 8 is a storage compartment 12 the bottom of which is constituted by a panel 13 which is secured at its edges to members 3 and 4 and cleats 14. Said compartment is adapted to accommodate the bed clothing of the device, when the latter is used as a couch, being readily accessible by simply rocking section 8 upwardly.
Upholstered cushions 15 are preferably provided upon the bottom sections 7 and 8 in order to produce a soft and comfortable couch or bed as the case may be.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrymg my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim asl new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a frame; a bottom member supported by said frame, said bottom member consisting of a plurality of movably connected sections, the terminal section at one end of said frame being adapted to assume either a horizontal or upwardly inclined position; means for supporting said terminal section in either of said positions; and an upwardly opening compartment in said frame, said terminal section serving as a closure for said compartment7 substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame; a bottom member supported by said frame, said bottom member consisting of a main section; a supplemental section liingedly connected with said main section at one end thereof, said supplemental section being adapted to assume either a horizontal position coplanar with said main section or an upwardly inclined position; pivotally mounted arms for releasably supporting said supplemental section in an upwardly inclined position; stops in said frame for supporting said supplemental section in lowered horizontal position; and an upwardly opening compartment in said frame, said supplemental section serving as a closure for said compartment, substantially as described.
8. A device of the class described comprising a frame; a bottom member supported by said frame, said bottom member consisting of a main section; a supplemental section hingedly connected with said main section at one end thereof, said supplemental section being adapted to assume either a horizontal position copla-nar with said main section or an upwardly inclined position; pivotally mounted arms lfor releasably supporting said supplemental section in an upwardly inclined position; a plurality of` Genies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissloner of atents,
