T. UARENGE. NOSTRIL PROTECTOR.
No. 598,467 Patented Feb. 1, 1898.

THOMAS OARENOE, OF HORTON, KANSAS.
NOSTRlL-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,467, dated February 1, 1898.
' Application 1118a November 14,1896. Serial No. ei2,111. (No model.)
To 60% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CARENCE, a citizen of the United States of America, 'residing at Horton, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nostril-Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac. companying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device adapted to close or approximately close the nostrils externally to prevent the entrance of dust carried by the atmosphere. During the months of July, August, and September after vegetation has ripened or dried up it forms a dust which when stirred up by the wind and carried to the mucous membrane of the nose irritates this membrane, causing inflammation, which results in closing the passages of the nose and the ducts leading thereto. condition exists in the case of hay-fever patients. My improved device is intended as apreventive against the entranceto the nostrils of this poisonous dust and as a safeguard against the aforesaid diseased condition of the nose. 1 r
The device consists of two small spring-held plates having interior projections adapted to grasp the central cartilage separating the nostrils, whereby the device is held in place, the position of the two plates being at the entrance to the nostrils.
The invention will now be described in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the device in-position for use. Figs. 2 and 3 show the device in detail and in two positions.
Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate each of two lever-like arms having interior projections 5*, connected by a pin 6, which forms a fulcrum. Connected with the outer extremities of the arms 5 and located between them is a coiled spring 7, which nor- This mally maintains the opposite extremities 5 of the arms closed. To the arms 5, between the fulcrum 6 and the extremities 5, are attached wings or small plates 8, which are outwardly deflected and form a suitable angle with the arms. lhese wings are preferably composed of thin sheet metal'covered on the inside with a layer of some soft material. The innersurface of the extremities 5 of the arms may also be similarly covered for obvious reasons.
In applying the device the outer extremities of the arms 5 are pressed sufficiently to open the inner extremities wide enough to grasp the central partition or cartilage dividing the two nostrils. The plates or wings 8 will then close or approximately close the nostrils externally, and thus prevent the entrance of foreign particles of matter in the form of dust for the reasons heretofore stated.
It must be understood that I do not limit the invention to the details of construction shown, as I am aware that other constructions may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a nostril-protector comprising two spring-held plates or wings adapted to close the entrance to the nostrils, and two arms to which the wings are attached, said arms projecting inwardly beyond the plates and adapted to grasp the cartilage separating the nostrils, whereby the device is supported in place.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a device of the class described comprising the two lever-like arms connected by a fulcrumpin, a spring connecting the arms on one side of the fulcrum and adapted to hold their inner extremities normally closed, win gs applied to the arms between the fulcrum and their inner extremities, the latter projecting interiorly beyond the wings and adapted to hold the device in place.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS OARENOE.
