NASAL PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,629, dated January 2, 1900. Application filed May 22, 1899. Serial No. 717,682. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LTHOMAS CARENOE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nasal Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in nasal protectors of the class set forth in Letters Patent numbered 598,467, issued to me February 1, 1898, my object being to provide a simplified and improved construction adapted to more perfectly perform the function set forth in the aforesaid patent-namely, the protection of the mucous membrane of the nasal passages from the poisonous dust with which the atmosphere is laden at certain seasons of the year,whereby the attendant evils are obviated or relieved; and to this end the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

meral 5 designate the nostrilclosing wings of x the device, each of which is provided with two ears 5, apertured to receive a hinge-pin 6, which is surrounded by a coil-spring '7, one extremity of which is attached to an ear of one wing, while the other extremity is connected with an ear of the other wing, whereby the normal tendency of the spring is to draw the wings together. To the inner surface of each wing is attached an arm 8,whose free extremity is provided with a socket 8*, in which is located a piece of soft elastic material 9, preferably composed of rubber. When the device is in use, these rubber cushions 9 engage the central cartilage separating the nostrils or nasal passages of the nose, whereby the device is held in place and said passages closed from the outside. Each wing 5 is provided with a slot 5, controlled by a valve-plate 10,pivotal1y mounted on the wing, as shown at 12. This valve is provided with a slot 10. The function of the valve is to control the admission of air to the nostrils as desired. In case the patient cannot conveniently breathe without the admission of some air to the nostrils the valve may be turned so that its slot shall register more 01' less with the slot in the wing, according to the needs or requirements of the individual. If it is not desired to admit air to the nostrils, the valve 10 is turned to completely close the slot 10 in each wing.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim is- 1. A nasal protector comprising two springheld, nostril-closing wings, suitable means attached to a wing or wings for controlling the admission of air to the nostrils, and means attached to the device for maintaining it in position for use.

2. Anasal protector comprising two spring= held, nostril-closing wings, each wing being provided with an aperture, and an adjustable valve mounted on the wing and arranged to control the admission of air through said wing-aperture.
