Description
G B'. FARMER.
NASAL EXPANDER- PatentedFeb. 2
(No Model.)
magg/ll!! Vl Du ATTORNEY UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
` GEORGE B. FARMER, OF PERTH, CANADA.
NASAL EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,441, dated February 2, 1897. Application filed .Tune 5l 1896. Serial No. 594,395. (No model.)
'To aZZ wil/0m t 771.614,/ concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. FARMER, of Perth, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Nasal Expander, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved nasal expander which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to properly expand the nasal Wings, t`o form open passages for the air inhaled through the nose and thus insure proper breathing, so essential to good health.
The invention consists of a yoke carrying on its free ends suction-cups adapted to adhere to the inner surface of the nasal Wings.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure l is a front elevation of the improvement as applied and with parts in section, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improvement.
The improved nasal expander is provided with a yoke A, made from a single piece of spring-Wire and bent into U form, as plainly indicated in Fig. l.
On the ends of the yoke A are secured cups B, having their open ends extending outwardly to engage the inner surfaces of the Wings C of the nose, the yoke A extending into the nasal passages with the bent portion at the outer end of the septum O', as plainly shown in Fig. l.
Each of the cups B is preferably made of rubber, with the center Bmade of hard rubber and with annular Iianges B2 of soft rubber, to permit of pressing the cup in contact with the Wing to expel air from the inside of the cup and to cause the latter to adhere by means of the air-pressure on the outer surface of the cup. The centers B of the cups are adapted to receive the ends of the yoke, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Now it Will be seen that by the arrangement described the expander can be readily inserted and applied to the nose, the suctioncups securely holding the device in position, so as to form open passages for the air inhaled through the nose during the breathing operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A nasal expander, comprising a springyoke, and suction-cups secured to the ends of the yoke, with their concavities facing in opposite directions, said cups having flexible rims and adapted to engage the inner surfaces of the nasal wings, substantially as described.
2. A nasal expander, comprising a yoke made of a piece of spring-Wire bent in U form, and suction-cups secured to the ends of the said yoke with their concavities facing in opposite directions, each suction-cup bey ing formed With a hard center and an annular flexible rim, substantially as shown and described.
