L. W. RHOADS. GOMMNATION'BBDSTEAD AND MANTBL. No. 597,591.
Patente Jn. 18, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATnNT LOW XV. RHOADS, OF SAN JOS, CALFORNIA.
COMBINATION BEDSTEAD AND MANTEL..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,591, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed April Z6, 1897.
To @ZZ wwm t may concern:
Be it known that I, LOW WV. RHOADS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jos, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Oombination Bedstead and Mantel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination bedsteads and mantels.
The object of the present invention is to provide a combined cabinet-mantel and folding bed which will be adapted to carry a heating apparatus and which will maintain the same in an upright position whether thebed he folded and in a vertical position or is arranged horizontally for use.
'The invention consists in the construction andl novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
- In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a combined cabinet-mantel and folding 'bed constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the lower portion of the same, the bed being in a horizontal position.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates an upright casing or cabinet provided with a rectangular space or compartment to receive a folding bed 2 and forming the top and sides of a cabinet-mantel, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings, and it is also provided with a forwardly-extending bottom 3, which constitutes a hearth.
The bed 2, which is pivot-ally mounted'at its lower ends between the sides of the case or cabinet, is adapted to swing downward from a vertical position within the same to a horizontal position, and its outer or lower face is provided with a mantel-shelf 4. It is provided below the mantel-shelf with a depression orrecess forming a fireplace 5 and provided with a reproof lining, and the outer face of the folding bed is ornamented by Serial No. 634,022. (No model.)
tiling or imitation thereof, and the ornamentation of the casing or cabinet and the folding bed may he made plain or elaborate, as desired.
The fireplace is rigid with the folding bed and forms a permanent part thereof, being carried with it in its upward and downward movement.
lVithin the recess or fireplace of the folding bed is arranged a swinging grate 6, pro vided at its ends with upwardly-extending perforated ears 7, receiving pivots 8, from which the grate depends. As the fireplace is rigid with the folding bed the grate may be hung therein and suspended above the hearth, and it is enabled to remain always in a perpendicular position and is not affected by the upward and downward swinging of the folding bed. It may be constructed of any desired conguration and may contain a heating apparatus, using oil or gas.
It will be seen that the grate is arranged so that it is adapt-ed at all times to remain in a perpendicular position and is unaffected by the movement of the folding bed and that it lmay contain any suitable heating apparatus.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrific ing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- A combined cabinet-mantel and folding bed comprising a casing or cabinet, and a folding bed pivotally mounted therein and adapted to swing upward and downward, said bed having a depression in its outer or lower face to form a fireplace and provided with a swinging grate pivoted within the fireplace and adapted to maintain a perpendicular position at all times, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOW W. RHOADS.
