UNITED STATES CLAUDE M. DUGAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVOTIONAL STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 689,29 5, dated December 17, 1901. Application filed March 19, 1901. erial No. 51,840. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE M. DUGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devotional Stools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to furniture, especially to that class designed for use in church es and for devotional purposes in the home.
The object of the invention is to produce a frame having a hinged knee-rest suitably upholstered and padded on its inner surface to act as a cushion for kneeling worshipers.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a stool-like stand for the top of the frame having a cushioned top, the stand being stationed on the frame in such relation to the knee-support as to act as a head-rest for the user While in a kneeling posture.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce a devotional stool which will prove ornamental, comparatively inexpensive, and durable.
Finally, the object of the invention is to provide novel means for retaining the standin position and for holding the knee-rest of the casing closed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawa knee-rest 2, hinged at its lower end thereto in such manner as to be capable of swinging outwardly to a horizontal position. It will be observed that the knee-rest is set in a distance and that the base-board 3 projects and acts as a support for the knee-rest when in its lowered position. The knee-rest is also provided with legs 3 on its outer surface at the top. The base supports suitably-orna-.
mented posts 4:, extending from the bottom to the top t, the posts on each side being separated and having framework 10 interposed therebetween at the top, said framework being provided with a recess 11.
The inner surface of the knee-rest has attached thereto a cushion 5, which may be of any ordinary formation and may be attached to the knee-rest in any manner preferred.
The stand comprises a cushioned board 6, having legs resting on the upper surface of the top 4. The cushion 8 may be set in or attached to the board; but it should be so padded on the edges as to protect the user. As shown in the drawings, the front supports are slightly shorter than the rear supports, thus giving to the head-rest an inclination toward the front. A contribution-drawer is slidable under the cushion of the head-rest, said drawer being slotted for the reception of the money.
A latch 9 is pivoted to the knee-rest on its inner surface at the edge and is adapted to swing out intoengagement with the edge of the recess in the framework, so as to retain the said knee-rest elevated.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the devotional stool may be used for home or church worship and that it will prove'a highly ornamental and useful addition to either.
It will be observed also that changes in the proportions and details of construction may be resorted to which fall fairly within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a devotional stool, a frame, said frame having its vertical sides formed of posts, a block interposed between the posts at their top, a recess centrally of the lower edge of the block, a knee-rest pivoted to the lower horizontal edge of the frame and adapted to swing vertically, a head-rest secured to the top of the frame, a latch pivoted to the inner sur-
