DU PLICATE-WHIST APPARATUS.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,122, dated January 11, 1898.
Application filed June l5, 1897. Serial No. 640,867. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may coa-cern; V
Be it known that I, JOHN OMWAKE, a resident of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Duplicate- Whist Apparatus, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to duplicate-Whist apparatus, and has for its object to produce a handy eiective device for preserving the hands in proper shape for the duplicate play. To this end my invention consists inthe con struction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar section of a modification, and Fig. et is likewise a similar section of a modification. Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the device comprises two parts, a box A and a cover B, hinged together edge to edge by hinges C. The box A has a bottom a, which, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, slopes upward from the ends a of the box to the middie u?. At the middle of the said box, at the highest point of the bottom, the said bottom has a iiat upper surface which shows in the form of a rib a3. iinger-holes 0,4, so that the lingers may be inserted below the edges of the cards. the inclined sides of the bottom is divided in the middle by a rib a5 d, so that the rib as and the ribs d5 a divide the box into four compartments having inclined bottoms, as clearly seen in Fig. EZ, wherein the hands I), E, F, and G may be received. Each of these compartments is of sufficient size to receive a plurality of playing-cards, Which are prevented from lateral movement by the Walls of the compartments. The cover B is provided With inclined or Wedge-shaped blocks b b2 h3 b4, which are adapted to enter the compartments containing the hands when the box-lid is closed. These blocks may be either hollow or solid, as sh own, and so also may the inclined bottom. The top is likewise provided with a rib b5, which enters between the hands in the box, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and preferably rests upon the highest part a3 of the inclined bottom of the bon. The ap paratus is likewise provided with coperatL ing fastening devices a' 177, which cooperate This rib as is recessed with l with each other to fasten the free edges of the carried by the top snugly fit the compartments containing the hands.
The modification shown in Fig. 3 is very similar to that shown in Fig. l, With the exception that the central rib a3 of the inclined bottom is prolonged upward, as shown, and the rib b5 is omitted, being now unnecessary.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 a combination of devices shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is exhibited. ed upward, but is grooved, as at a, and a tongue am is provided on the lower face of the top of the box to enter this groove.
Iv have found that the device is a very efficient one for the purpose named and securely holds the hands separate until the time for the duplicate play.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a du plicate-whist apparatus, the combination of Va box having a plurality of oompartments each provided with a stationary inclined bottom, means for maintaining cards against lateral movement in said compartments, and a cover contacting with the cards and coperating with said box to maintain the cards in their proper relative position and against displacement therein, substantially as described.
2. In a duplicate-Whist apparatus, the combination of a box having one or more compartments each of which is of sufficient size to receive a plurality of playing-cards which are prevented from lateral movement by the Walls of said compartments, stationary inclined bottoms in each of said compartments, and a cover having inclined blocks adapted to enter the compartments to secure the hands in place.
3. In a duplicate-Whist apparatus, the combination of a box having a plurality of compartments with inclined bottoms sloping downward away from the middle portion of the box, cachot said compartments being of sufiicient size to receive a plurality of playing-cards and maintain the same against lateral movement, nger-recesses between compartments and a cover.
In this figure the rib a3 is extend-4 IOC 4. In a duplicate-Whist apparatus, the comarranged to come opposite the highest portion bination of a boX having a plurality of colnof 'the bottom of the box, substantially as departments with inclined bottoms sloping scribed.
downward from the middle portion of the box, JOHN OMVAKE. 5 divisions between the compartments and a Witnesses:
cover provided with inclined blocks for en- F. D. JAMISON,
tering the said compartments and a rib as b5 S. S. SANGUINETTE.
