To all whom itmay concern:

Be it known that I, OHAUNcEY D. BRADT, of the village of Green Island, county of Albany, and, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Attaching Color Specimens to Sample Sheets, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to improvements upon that class of devices which are used to attach color specimens to sample-cards, and more particularly to the apparatus shown and described in Letters Patent No. 556,175, granted to me and dated March 10, 1896. In the former patent an apparatus is shown in which the color specimens are placed in receptacles, and they are forced to engage with the printed card to which they are to be pasted by the downward movement of the box inclosing the color specimens and by which the piston arranged beneath the tickets forces the latter to contact with the pasted sheet. In the apparatus herein shown likepartitions are employed to form ticketholding-area inclosures with pistons beneath them which are actuated to move upwardly to attach the color specimens to the pasted card with the box inclosing the partitions and the latter stationary.

My invention also relates to a method of connecting the partitions and securing the latter in the box and also to a manner of making the plungers used in the ticket areas.

Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there are four plates of drawings containing twenty figures illustrating my invention with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them.

Of the illustrations, Figure 1 is a top View of the apparatus with the hinged card-carrying cover shown as turned over and down and the pasted type after having applied paste to the card having been withdrawn and resting on the pasting-bed. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the apparatus with the pasting-type in a position to deposit paste upon a card placed on the cover. Fig. 3 is a top View of the paster-type frame and case with one of its areas shown as filled with pasting-type. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line w w of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the partitions running lengthwise of the ticketboX. Fig. 6 is aside view of one of the crosspartitions of the ticket-box. Fig. 7 is a crosssection taken through the partitions running lengthwise of the box. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the device with the paster-cover folded over and down on the box for the attachment of the tickets. Fig. 9 is a cross-section taken on the line so as of Fig. 8. Fig. 19 is a top view of the plunger shown at Fig. 18, formed of blocks,with the grooves in the latter indicated by a dotted line; and Fig. 20 illustrates in a top view another form of plunger produced from plunger-blocks.

The several parts of the apparatus thus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:

The letter B designates the box or inclosure in which the partitions forming the colorticket inclosures are placed. The ends of the box or inclosure are vertically grooved at Z2 into which the ends of the longitudinal partitions p are inserted, and they are held in place in said grooves at each end by the rods It, passing through the ends of the box and through a passage 0, formed in each of the plates 19 at each end of the latter. Each of these plates 19 is of a comb form and by which construction it is slotted upwardly from the bottom about half its width.

The letters 19 designate the cross-partitions, each of which is made with a shoulder h at each end, with this shoulder, when the crossplates are in position, resting upon the ledge Z, formed in each of the box sides, and the letp and p may be connected by the passage of each within the slots of the other at such dis tance apart as will form ticket-inclosures of various sizes. The spaces or inclosures for containing tickets are designated at 25 as 'shown at Figs. 11 and 12.

The letters P designate the pistons, each of which is arranged in one of the ticket-inclosures t beneath the tickets, and these pistons at their lower ends rest upon an elastic bed Z2, arranged on the upper surface of the horizontal plate I, as shown at Fig. 9.

The letters V W designate inclines or wedges arranged on and secured to the under side of the plate I, of which there are two at each end of said plate.

The letters W W designate wedges or inclines, of which there is one arranged upon the opposite ends of the slide-bars 'm and m and these last-named wedges in their inc1ination are the opposite of the wedges or in clines XV upon the plate I. These slide-bars m and m are provided with slides g in the machine-base. D, with the inclines formed,

thereon adapted to engage with those upon the under side of the plate I to force upwardly the latter. These wedging-surfaces on the plate I and the slide-bars m and m are made witha tongue-and-groove connection, as indicated by the dotted line 9 by which the upper wedging-surface is kept in alinement with the lower one. The letters T designate the legs on which the box is supported.

The letter L designates a lever which at Z is pivoted to the machine-base at Z and at its outer end this lever is slotted at m and provided with a slide-pin 111 connected to the slide-bar m and the letter m designates a slot formed in the lever L between its pivoted fulcrum and its handle end 71 and the letter m designates a slide-pin connecting with the slide-bar m and arranged in said slot m As thus constructed when the lever is reciprocated on its pivoted construction the wedging-surfaces W will engage with those designated at which will cause the plate I and the pistons resting thereon to rise, and thus force the tickets to contact with the pasted areas upon the card.

The letter C designates the cover of the box, on the inner side of which the cards are placed to be pasted, and this cover is hinged to the side of the box 13 at H. g

The letters G designate guides for positioning the card upon the cover, these guides consisting of a disk d, secured by a screw s and a tip 19 projected upwardly from the disk, and by which construction the disk may be turned and secured as adjusted by the screw, as shown at Fig. 13.

The letters A designate clamps for holding the card in position. These clamps are attached to the hollow hinging-rod H which is centrally slotted, by means of a screw, the head of which straddles the slot and connects with a plate a which straddles the inner edges of the slot. The screw, being indicated at a adapts the clamp so as to be attached to different parts of the hinging-rod to adapt them for use with differingsized cards.

The letter A designates a clamping-bar which at a is hinged to the rod H and at its front end is provided with a latch adapted to hook onto the front edge of the cover to keep the card in position upon the cover.

The letters F designate a printers form or case into which are placed the pasting-type. and the latter are secured within an inner frame F by driving past each other between the inner frame and the outer frame wedges having opposite inclination. These wedges are designated at w and 1.0 These pastingtype T have their edges beveled off at their impress ends, as shown at Figs. 3 and 4, and they are arranged within the frame F between its partitions a n n -n at such distances and of such sizes as are required to paste upon the card areas suited to the tickets which are to be attached.

The letters J designate blocks adapted to attach and connect so as to form pistons of various sizes. These blocks are grooved at their sides near their ends, as is shown at 9".

The letter K designates a vertical bar which at its lower end connects by means of a balland-socket joint J 2 with the upper face or the case d on the under face of which the frames F and F inclosing the pasting-type. are placed.

The letter cl designates a horizontal bar which at one of its ends pivotally connects with the upper end of the vertical bar K and at its other end is journaled in a slot formed in the standard S, and Where passing through the latter to extend beyond the standard this horizontal bar 61 is provided with a counterpoise Z. As thus constructed the case it can be caused to rest on a pasting-bed, (not shown,) and thus take up paste, and then to be swung around so as to descend onto a card arranged on the cover 0 to deposit paste thereon in areas corresponding to the face of the type and the tickets which are to be attached to the card.

The apparatus thus illustrated and described is operated as follows: Tickets having been placed in the ticket-inclosures to rest on the pistons and paste having been applied to a card placed on the cover 0 by the pasting-type, as before described, the cover C is turned over and down and there held in contact with the box, while the lever L is out, and the card removed for a repetition of the operation.

In my older patent before alluded to the ticket-pistons were stationary and the box and partitions were operated to move downwardly in slides, so as to bring the tickets in contact with the past-ed area-s, thus diftering from the operation of the apparatus herein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an apparatus for applying color-tickets to cards pasted atregular intervals, substantially as described; the combination with a stationary box provided with a hinged cover constructed and arranged to receive cards thus pasted, and having a body part provided with interiorly arranged partitions, forming ticket-inelosures registering with the pasted areas of the card when the cover is turned down; a piston for each inclosure beneath the tickets; an elastic bed beneath the pistons provided with inclines on its under surface; slide-bars having gnidesin the base and pro vided with wedges; and a lever pivoted to the base between said slide-bars, and to the latter, whereby said elastic bed and pistons may be raised by the lateral movement of the lever and the upper ticket in each inclosure be caused to come in contact with the pasted area of the card with which it registers, substantially as shown and described.
