APPARATUS FOR ATTACHING COLOR SPECIMENS TO SAMPLE-SHEETS.

Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY D. BEADT, of the village of Green Island, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Attaching Color Specimens to Sample- Book Sheets, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to an apparatus by which color specimens painted on squares of paper can be pasted onto sheets of paper to form the pages of sample-books. These colors or tints are usually designated'by numbers and placed in rows, with the color-number above or below the ticket pasted on the sheet. Heretofore the putting on of these color tickets or specimens has been done by hand, which was a slow tedious process, attended with the contingency of mistakes as to location and accompanying irregularity in their attachi To have the tint or color specimens applied with accuracy, uniformity and rapidity is the object of my invention.
Accompanying this specification, to form a part of it, there are three plates of drawings, containing thirteen figures, illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter-reference used in all of them.
Of the illustrations, Figure 1 is a plan view of the pasting apparatus, consisting of the pasting-die and cover, shown with the latter opened out on its hinged connection. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 0c of Fig. 1, with the parts closed on their hinged connection. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line @c2 c2 of Fig. 1, with the cover shown as closed on its hingedconnection to rest on the pasting die parts. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the apparatus used to contain and apply the colortickets to the papersheets. Fig. 5 is a top view of the device shown at Fig. 4, with the cover part opened and turned over on its hinged connection. Fig. 6 is a cross-section taken on the line m2 x2 of Fig. 5, with the cover shown as closed down on its hinged connection. The several parts of the apparatus thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:
The letter P designates the pasterdie, which is provided with relief-surfaces a, having in form the shape of the color-tickets to be pasted. The bed of the paster-die on which these relief-surfaces are formed is designated at B, and the relief-surfaces are produced by grooves g, intersecting each otherat right angles. Thus when the paste is applied to the raised square surfaces ce, and a sample-book sheet is laid thereon and pressed by closing in over the paper, the cover C on its hinged connection, paste will be applied to the sheet in areas corresponding to those of the paster-die. f
The letter T designates a partition-box in whichv there is formed inclosures E, each having the form of the color-ticket to be pasted. This partition-box is arranged to be moved up and down in the slideways G, formed inside of the sides S, upwardly projected from the base D.
The letters S2 designate a spring arranged to bear on the side bottom edge e2 of the boX, and against the force of which spring the box is forced downwardly.
The letters P2 designate pistons which in cross-section have the form of the color-ticket inclosures E, there being one of these pistons for each of said inclosures, and the letter m designates a spring arranged on the lower end IOO of each of the pistons, one of the latter being shown as detached at Fig. S. These pistons are each arranged in one of the inclosures E, with the color-tickets t2 resting on the pistonheads, as shown at Figs. G and '7.
The letter C2 designates a cover which is hinged at h2 to the box T at one of its sides.
The letters N N designate paper-rests,which in each instance of their use consist of a horizontally-placed bar which at each of its ends is supported upon a spring n2, arranged in a recess u, formed in the top edge of the box at each side of the latter and so arranged that when the cover C2 is forced downwardly to close on its hinged connection it will cause the paper-rests N to descend, so that their top surfaces will be in alignment with the top edges of the box T. These rests are shown as raised by the springs, so as to be above the top edges of the box sides, as shown at Fig. 13, and as moved downwardly by the cover 2, with their top edges in alignment horizontally with the top edges of the box at its sides, as shown at Fig. l2. The function of these rests is to facilitate the application ot the paper before closing down the cover with the paper resting on the unpasted surfaces of the rests, when it may be positioned to have its pastor surfaces register accurately with the tickets in the inclosure E. As thus constructed, with the inclosures E containing color-tickets rest ing upon plungers or pistons and a sheet of paper having paste applied thereto in places that will register vertically with the ticketinclosures and with said pasted paper laid upon the paper-rests N, when the cover C2 is forced downwardly the latter will force downwardly the paper-rests until they are in horizontal alignment with the top edges of the box T at its sides, and as the box is pushed downwardly in its slides the pistons P2 will each force to contact with one of the pasted parts of the paper a ticket, which will adhere to the paper when the box is raised in the slides by its springs, and the cover C2 being raised the paper is removed, and another, which has been pasted in parts that will register with the inclosures E, can be introduced and the operation repeated as before.
Vhile I have shown the die P as used for pasting the sheets at proper intervals, if desired, a stencil having cut-out areas corresponding to the tickets to be attached or any other weil-known means that will apply paste to the paper in such position may be used.
The apparatus may be used with or without the paper-rests N. ly using the parti tions d, oppositely grooved at g2, as shown at Figs. f), lO, and 1l, the cross-area oi the inclosures E may be varied as to size so as to contain color-tickets of larger or smaller crossareas, in which case the relief-surfaces a of the pastor-die must be made to have the same area as those formed by the intertonguing partitions.
llaving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an apparatus for applying color-tickets to sheets of paper which have been pasted at regular intervals, substantially as described, the combination with a box having a hinged cover and having slideways in which it can be moved downwardly against the force oi' sprin arranged between the box and its bed or bottoni; oi ticket-inclosures hav ing in cross-section the form of the tickets to be attached, and arranged within said box and each provided with a piston having a spring between the latter and the box-bed, whereby when a sheet of paper having pasted areas, registeringwith said ticket-inelosures, is placed over said box and the box-cover is closed and the box forced downwardly, a ticketwill be deposited on each of the paperpasted areas, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the box T, having the ticket-inclosures E, of the slideways S, having springs S2, hinged cover C2, and provided with a base D; of the pistons P2, each arranged within one of the inclosures E, and having a spring m, arranged between the base l), and the piston-bottom, constructed and arranged to be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination with the box T, provided with the ticket-inclosures E, having the paper-rests N, N, and cover C2, slideways S, each having a spring S2, and provided with a base D; of the pistons P2, each arranged in one of the inclosures E, and having a spring m, arranged between the basel), and pistonbottoin, constructed and arranged to be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
