This invention relates to a. title line e ualzing device for equalizing the rows o set type in a book binders printing pallet so that they may be brought into symmetry and thus enable the titles of books to be artistically printed.
One important obj ect of the invention is to provide means for simultaneously adjusting a number of rows of loose set type in a book 1n binders pallet into symmetrical relation.
A second important object of the invention is to provide means for holding the rows o loose type in their symmetrical relation during the locking up of the form or pallet.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a stand on which a book binders pallet may be centered for setting type therein, the stand carrying novel mechanism for centering lines of type laterally of the 210 pallet.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, il-
N lust-rated in the accompanying drawings, and
specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, acters of reference indicate like parts several views, and

showing the type loosely arranged in the pallet before equalizing.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown-there is provided a stand having legs 10 and an inclined top 11 whereon rests a 86 suitable head frame. This head frame includes a pair of end plates 12 tied together by a bottom or base 13. Extendingbetween the lower parts of the plates 12 adjacent the sides thereof is a pairof pivot bolts `14 hav- `60 ing the angle portions of certain bell crank levers pivoted thereon for independent rocking movement. Each lever has a substantially vertical arm 15 and a substantially horizontal arm 16. These levers are `arranged in cooperating pairs with the horizontal arms 16 of each pair projecting toward each other and interlocked as at 17. Between the bell cranks are arranged spacer bars 18 which have their ends supported onvv the bolts 14. A pull rod 19 is secured to the horizontal arm of one lever of each pair through an opening 20 in the base 13. A treadle lever 21 has one end pivoted to a bracket 22 ixed on the lower part of one pair of legs 10 and projects or- 75 wardly to terminate in a treadle 23. The rods 19 pass downwardly through suitable openings in this lever and extend for some distance therebelow to terminate each in a head 24. Surrounding each rod between the lever 21 and head 24 1s a coiled compression spring 25. By this means downward tension may be exerted on the several rods while permitting unequal downward movements.
Obviously, as shown in Figure 4, downward movement of a rod will draw thearms 15 of the pair of: bell cranks controlled thereby equally inward at their free upper ends. Undercut strips 26 connect the upper edges of the ends 12 and a U-shaped spring frame 27 90 has its legs connected to the ends 12 and projects laterally therefrom so that springs 28 ma each have one end secured to this frame an its other end secured to a respective vertical leg 15 of a bell crank, these springs urg- 95 ing the legs 15 of each pair of bell cranks apart.
The pallet used in connection with the parts just described consists of a base 29 having a dove-tail tongue 30 extending from endA 100 to end of its under side. This tongue is of proper dimension to lit between the strips 26 and a stop pin 31 is provided on the head to limit movement of the pallet and ensure its being properly positioned. Extending up from the side port-ions of the hase 29 are side pieces 32 provided with suitable slots 33 for the reception of plungers 34 arranged. in opposed pairs corresponding in position to the positions of the pairs of bell cranks and each bell crank arm 15 is provided with a notch 35 to receive the end of a respective plunger.
There has thus been provided a simple and h efficient device of the kind described and for the purposespeciiied.
.It is obvious that minor changes mayy be made in the form and construction of the device without .departing from the principles involved. It is therefor desired to include, as the invention, all forms which properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention what .is claimed is A1. A type justifying mechanism for title printing including a pallet having means for supporting lines of type, pairs of plungers, the plungers of each pair being arranged at opposite ends of a respective line of type, a head supporting said pallet,'bell cranks supported on said head and arranged in pairs, one' arm of each bell crank engaging a respective plunger, the remaining arms of each pair being interlocked, and pull mechanism for moving the pairs of bell cranks simulr taneously, said pull mechanism including yieldable springs whereby to permit one pair of the plungers to operate upon stoppage of movement of another pair of plungers.
2. A type justifying mechanism for title printing including a pallet having means` for holding lines of type, means for simultaneously moving the type to cause the lines to assume symmetrical positions in relation to a pallet center line, and' means bearing against the upper and lower sides of the lines of type to clamp the type against movement upon said type being centered in the pallet. 3. A type justifying mechanism for title printing including a pallet having means for supporting lines of type, pairs of plungers, the plungers of each pair being arranged at opposite ends of a respective line of type, means for moving the plungers of each pair symmetrically inward, and means bearing against the upper and lower sides of the lines of type to clampthe type against movement upon said type being centered in the pallet.
l 4.- kA type justifying mechanism for title printing including a pallet having means for supporting lines of type, pairs of plungers,
the plungers of each pair being arranged at the type against movement upon said type being centered in the pallet. L l5. A type justifying mechanism for title printing including a pallet having means for supporting lines of type, pairs of plungers, the plungers Vof each pair being arranged at opposite ends of a respective line of type, a ead supporting said pallet, bell cranks supported on said head and arranged in pairs, one arm of each bell crank engaging a respective plunger, the remaining arms of each pair being interlocked, pull mechanism for moving the pairs of hell cranks simultaneously, and means bearingagainst the upper and lower sides of the lines of type to clamp the type against movement upon said type being centered in the pallet.
6. A type justifying mechanism for title printing including a pallet having means forv supporting lines of type, pairs of plungers, the plungers of each pair being arranged at opposite ends of a respective line of type, a head supporting said pallet, bell cranks supported on said head and arranged in pairs, one arm of each bell crank engaging a respective plunger, the remaininglarms of each pair being interlocked, pull mechanism for moving the pairs of bell cranks simultaneously, said pull mechanism including yieldable springs whereby to permit one pair `of theA plungers to operate upon stoppage of movement of another pair of plungers, and means toclamp the type against movement upon said type being centered in the pallet.
