Referring to the drawing for describing in detail the arrangement as disclosed therein, the.referencecharacter L indicates a main base member which preferably is. formed as a, metallic casting made hollow toaccommodate certain of the working. parts. At one end of: this base casting is arranged a platforml connectedat theupper end of. a vertical. plungerrod 2 which extends downwardly rom. the platform through a pair of. bearings as. 3; and 4: spaced apart within the base, the bearing 3v being arranged at the. upper wall of, the baseand the bearing 4 being arranged at the lower wall of the base.

Within the base L therod 2 carries a second collar as 8, adjustable thereon adapted toengage the under-surface of the bearing 3 for limiting the upward movement of the rod at all times. 7 Alsowitghi v the base, and resting normally flat upon the upper-surface of the bottom wall of the base surrounding thev bearing 4 is a gripper plate 9. This plate is elongated and hasan opening as 10 at one end through which the rod 2 extends. Theother end as 11 of the plate extends into position above one end of a lever 12 by means of which the end 11 of the plate may be tipped at will.

An adjustable set screw as 13 is arranged above the end 11 of the plate, being mounted at an easily accessible point in the upper wall of the base L, said set screw being adapted to determine the extent to which the end 11 may be lifted by the lever 12.

So long as the plate 9 rests flat down upon the bottom wall of the base the opening 10 is axially aligned with the rod 2 but whenever the end 11 of the plate is lifted this axial alignment is destroyed and the side walls of the opening 10 are brought into gripping engagement with the rod whereupon further lifting of the end 11 will result in a corresponding lifting movement of the rod, from which it follows that until the lever 12 is operated the platform 1 is free to move up and down at will so that an operator may place thereon a doll head or the like and thus depress the platform to any desired extent as may be required by the characteristics of the doll head or of the eye set which is to be attached thereinto. The rod 2 during this period will merely slide freely through the opening 10 of the plate 9.

When the desired position of the doll head has been attained, as for instance when the eye sockets of the head have been brought into engagement with the eyes of the eye set, the lever 12 will be operated to move the plate 9 into engagement with the screw 13. The initial movement of the plate will tip the plate into biting engagement with the rod and the further movement will lift the rod, and with it the doll head just the right amount, as determined by screw 13 to ease the eye sockets of the head upwardly away from their previous tight engagement with the eyes of the set.

It will be apparent therefore that the amount of upward movement imparted to the head will at all times, be uniform and in no way dependent upon the shape or size of the head.

As a simple expedient by which to support the head in a desired position upon the platform 1 the platform may if desired be provided with a plurality of separate rests as 1414, these being independently adjustable as by consisting of short rods longitudinally movable within vertical openings as 1515 provided through the platform and held in any adjusted position as by set screws or the like 16-16.

Any appropriate means may beprovided for operating the lever 12 but in the instance illustrated said lever is shown to be pivoted intermediate its length as at 17 and to have its opposite end connected with a link as 18 extending downwardly to a suitable foot lever as 19. A coil spring as 20 may be provided for holding the lever normally in position with the plate 9 resting fiat upon the bottom wall of the base.

The portion of the tool which is intended for supporting the eye set 21 in position to receive the doll head G thereover and for fastening the eye set within the doll head may take any desired form but in the instance illustrated consists of a mechanism corresponding essentially with the device shown and described in the patent to Alexander Konolf, No. 1,621,073, that is to say it embodies a pair of levers as 22 and 23 arranged for supporting the eye set and an operating handle as 24 by means of which said levers may be moved to operate fastening means for attaching the eye set into the doll head.

The eye set 21 may obviously be of any type adapted to be operated upon for effecting its attachment within the doll head, but in the instance illustrated an, eye set is shown which also conforms to the eye set shown in said Konoif patent mentioned, in that it embodies a pair of eye shells as 2727 mounted on a carrier 28 which is intended to be attached to the doll head. The carrier has fastening means consisting of a pair of slidable attaching members 2929 movable away from each other for impaling their outer ends as 303O into the material of opposite side walls of the doll head. The attaching members 29 are shown as having openings 3131 therein into which engage lugs as 32-32 on the

' In operating this tool it is simply necessary for an operator to place an eye set in position upon the supporting

22 and 23, space a dollhead upon the platform 1 with its eye sockets brought down firmly over the eyes of the eye set, then depress the foot lever 19 to lift the doll head for easing the sockets off of the eyes, and then operate the handle 24 to attach the eye set within the head in its adjusted relationship.

It will be understood that this invention is not concerned with the particular type of eye set employed, or with the particular form of the doll head, or with the particular construction and operation of that part of the tool which supports the eye set and operates to fasten the eye set within the doll head, it being obvious that the construction and opplace, designated herein generally by the ref-' erence character 25, will depend upon the type of doll head and eye set which is in work at a particular time. The device illustrated and claimed in the mentioned pending Konolf application is merely cited and illustrated herein as an example, and it is pointedout that this device is preferably formed sep arate from the base L and is removably con nected with said base as by means of a suitable clamp device such as the clamp screw or the like 26. By removing the screw 26 the device 25 illustrated may be detached and a different device as readily placed in position upon the base, the substitute device being of a character for instance to support and at tach a different type of eye set within a head.

Since attaching means of various kinds embodied directly in the eye sets are now well known in thisart, as are also various tools or devices for supporting and attaching such eye sets, it is deemed unnecessary to illustrate or describe in detail any particular type of eye set or any particular type of attaching means.

As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description, or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is '1. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, comprising means for supporting the doll head, means for supporting the eye set with the eyes thereof within the eye openings of the head, and means manually 0perable to move the doll head with respect to the eye set to thereby adjust-the eyes in said openings. p

2. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, comprising means for supporting both the eye set and the doll head, and means manually operable to move the doll head with respect to the eye set, together with means for attaching the eye set within the head.

3. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a base, means carried by the base for supporting an eye set, means carried by the base for supporting a doll head, and means whereby the doll head supporting means is manually movable to facilitate movement of the head into proper register with the eye set.

4. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a base, means carried by the base for supporting an eye set, means carried by the base for supporting a doll head, meanswhereby the doll head supporting means is manually movable to facilitate movement ofv the head into proper register with the eye set, and means by which to effect attachment of the eye set to the doll head.

5. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a base, a part carriedby the base upon which tosupport the eye set, a second part carried by the base upon which to support the doll head, the dollhead supporting part being movable with respect to the base and with respect to said first mentioned part for-thereby moving the doll head with respect to the eye set, and. means by which to so move the second mentioned part.

A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a relatively stationary part to support one element of the work, a second part movable relative to the first part adapted thereby to support the second element of the work adjustably with respect to the first element, and means operable to effect attachment of the two elements adjusted relation bysaid two mentioned parts.

7 A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a: relatively stationary part arranged to support the eye set, a relatively movable part arranged to support the doll head whereby to permit the doll head to be brought into engagement with the eye set, means tomove the support in a. different direction to thereby move the head out of engagement with the eye set, and means to fasten the eye set in the doll head. V

9. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising means to support an eye set, a support for the doll head movable in one direction to permit the doll head to be brought into engagement with the eye set, means to move the support in a different direction to thereby move the head out of engagement with the eye set, means to limit the second mentioned movement of thesupport, and means to fasten the eye set in the doll head.

10. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said toolcomprising a base, a part carried thereby by which to support the eye set and by which the eye set maybe fastened in the doll head, a second part carried by the base by which to support the doll head, said second part being movable to permit manual adjustment of the head into register with the eye set, and means adjustable to while said two elements are being held in their limit a movement of the head with respect to the eye set.

11. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a base, a part carried thereby by which to support the eye set and by which the eye set may be fastened in the doll head, a second part carried by the base by which to support the doll head, said second part being movable to permit manual adjustment of the head into register with the eye set, a further part manually operable to move the second mentioned part and the head in a given direction with respect to the eye set, and means adjustable to limit the last mentioned movement.

12. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a base, a part carried thereby by which to support the eye set and by which the eye may be fastened in the doll head, a second part carried by the base by which to support the doll head, rid second part comprising a platform, a slidably mounted plunger connected with the platform, spring means urging the plunger and platform in one direction to resiliently support the doll head whereby to permit manual movement of the doll head in one direction against the eye set, a gripping device for gripping the plunger, and means operable upon the gripping device to cause movement of the plunger in a direction to move the doll head out of engagement with the eye set.

13. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in set ' doll heads, said tool comprising a base, a part carried thereby by which to support the eye set and by which the eye set may be fastened in the doll head, the base providing a pair of spaced bearing openings therethrough, a plunger slidable in said bearings, a plate having an aperture through which said plunger freely moves, means carried by the plunger by which to support a doll head thereon, a spring engaging the plunger to resiliently urge the plunger in one longitudinal direction, means whereby said mentioned plate may be tilted at will into gripping engagement with the plunger and to thereby move the plunger, and means adjustable to limit the extent movement of said plate.

14-. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a base, a part carried ther by by which to support the eye and by which the eye set may be fastened in the doll head, a depressible platform upon which the doll head may be rested in being brought into contact with the eye set, and manually movable lifting means for the i'ilatfoirm arranged to err the )latform in any position to which the platform is deressed by the head and to move the platform upwardly a predetermined distance.

15. It tool for use in mounting eye sets 1n doll heads, said tool comprising a base, a part carried thereby by which to support the eye set and by which the eye set maybe fastened in the doll head, a depressible platform upon which the doll head may be rested in being brought into contact with the eye set, and manually movable lifting means for the platform arranged to grip the platform in any position to which the platform is depressed y the head and to move the platform upwardly a predetermined distance, together with adjustable doll head engaging means carried by the platform.

16. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising one part for supporting the doll head, another partfor supporting the eye set by means of which the eye set may be attached in the doll head, and means detachably connecting said parts together.

17. A tool for use in mounting eye sets in doll heads, said tool comprising a part for supporting the eye set, another part for supporting the doll head, and means for effecting attachment of the eye set within the doll head.
