Be it known that I, Josnr TissLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bally, in the county of vBerks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Rivet Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rivet holders and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed. 1
An object of the invention is to provide a rivet holder of simple and durable structure adapted to retain the rivet in position while the'same is beingv passed through the material to which it is applied, and means for spreading the end of the rivet over the surface of the material to which the rivet is applied. u

The rivet holder comprising a bracket 1 which is applied to a stand 2 in a usual manner. This bracket includes an upper portion and a lower portion, the latter being in the form of an abutment. A screw 3 is threaded through the upper portion of the bracket 1. An anvil member 4 is mounted upon a stub shaft 5 and is located in the bracket 1 below the screw 3.
The anvil member 4 is provided at its center with a cone shaped mound portion 6 having spaced lugs 7 located at the opposite sides thereof. The mount 6 is provided with a flat upper surface 8.' Rivet holding bars 9 are slidably mounted between the lugs 7 and carry at points between their ends transversely disposed pins 10, the end portions of which are received in slots 11 provided in the side of the bracket member 1. The said slots n11 diverge upwardly and outwardly away from each other and are located one beyond each side of the anvil member 4. The lower end of the shaft 5 is screw threaded in a sleeve 12 which is pivotally connected with one end of a lever 13 fulcrumed below the lower side of the bracket 1. The lever 13 is operatively connected by means of a rod 14 HOLDER.

rlhe collar 18 is slidably mounted upon the sleeve 12 and is provided with oppo* sitely disposed arms 19 which are connected by means of links 20 with the rivet holding bars 9. 1 The rivet holding bars 9 are provided at their inner ends with their recesses 21 which are adapt-.ed to receive the rivet 22 when the same is positioned upon the flat upper surfaceV 8 ofthe anvil mem# ber 4. A spring 23 is coiled around the stub shaft 5 and the upper end thereof bears against the under surface of the anvil member 4 and the lower end thereof bearsagainst the upper edge of the collar 18. In Figure 3 of the drawing, the rivet 22 is shown as being passed through two strips of material 24 and the anvil member 4 is shown in an elevated position so that the head of the rivet is spread over the upper surface of the upper strip 24 by contact with the lower end of theV screw 3.` n
In use, the treadle 15 is depressed with the foot whereby the lever 13 is swung and the sleeve 12 and stub shaft 5 together with the anvil member 4 are elevated. As the anvil member 4 moves in an upward direction, the inner ends of the rivet holding bars 9 are moved upwardly so that the pins 10 move along the slots 11. Thus the inner ends of the bar 9 are spread, and the rivet 22 is placed upon the flat surface 8 of the anvil member 4. Pressure is then removed from the treadle l5 whereby the anvil member 4 descends under the influence of `the spring 17 and the inner ends of the bar 9 come together at the opposite sides of the rivet 22 and hold the same in position upon the flat surface 8 of the anvil member 4. The strips 24 are then placed over the rivet '22 with the rivet openings receiving the said rivet and pressure is then applied to the foot treadle 15 whereby the anvil memvber- 4 is moved in an upward direction and the upper end of the rivet 22 is forced into contact with the screw 8 whereby the rivet is spread and the strips 24 are secured together in the manner as best indicated in Figure 3 of the drawing.

When the anvil member 4 is moved in an upward direction to spread the head of the rivet 22, the bars 9 move away from each other and assume the positions asnshown in Figure 3 of the drawing. This is due to the fact that the pins l() move into the upper portions of the slots 1l and by reason of the fact that the Vspring 23 holds the collar 18 down against the body of the bracket l. The cone shaped surfaces of the mound 6 spread the innerends of the bars 9`so that the under surface of the lower-Y most strip 24 comes directly in contact with the head at one end of the rivet 22.
Having thus described the invention, whatI claim as new is z- 1. A rivet holder comprising a bracket having an abutment member, an anvil member mounted for movement in the bracket and provided with a cone shaped mound portion located 'below the abutment member, said` anvil member being provided at opposite sides of the said mound portion with spaced lugs, rivet holding bars having their inner end portions engaging the mound portion of the anvil and having their intermediate portions disposed between the lugs, pins carried by the bars, the bracket member having divergmg slots which receive the pms, and means for moving the anvil member verticallyand swing` Y ing the rivet holding bars to cause the inner ends thereof to uncover the intermediate portion of the mound of the anvil.
2. A' rivet holding machine comprising a ybracket having an abutment member, an anvil member provided at its center with a cone shaped mound portion which is located below the abutment member, a stub having slots, pins carried-bythe rivet hold' ing bars andhaving end portions received in the slots, and links connecting the rivet holding b ars with the collar.
