One of the principal objects of the inven-v tion is to provide a machine for the purpose referred to which shall be simple in construction, which can be operated by an unskilled person, and which can be quickly adjusted.

Another obj ect' of the invention is to provide a machine which can be quickly operated to apply paste or other adhesive substance to a card or folder at the required distances apart prior to attaching the sample strip to said cards or folders. I

Still another object is to provide a machine of the character referred to which can be operated by foot-treadles or pedals and by hand, in contradistinction to power operated machines.

The foregoing objects Vand advantages are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine for applying samples to cards and made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the numeral 1 designates the framework of the machine comprising uprights 2, a tray 3 and a Ipaste applying Iplatform 4. Mounted to move vertically within the frame is a diaphragm 5 supported upon the upper end of the connecting rod 6 attached at its lower end to a foot-treadle 7 pivotally mounted as at 8 to lugs rising from the floor. Within the tray 3 a tablet 9 is connected by a hinge 10 and said tablet is provided with a sheet of fabric 11 placed thereon to which is secured a series of pasteblocks 12, said blocks being secured at the required distances apart to provide a space between the sample strips when secured to the cards. roller 17 is mounted to rotate within the frame, and a handle 18 for operating the roller projects upward from said frame. A paste receptacle 19 is formed upon or secured to the upper end of the tray 3, and leading from said receptacle to an elevated portion of the tray is an absorbent pad 20, upon which the roller 17 may'be moved to take a quantity of paste to be rolled upon the blocks 12, the connecting rods 13 and levers 15 permitting the roller to move from the pad 2() over the blocks, as shown in Fig. 2. the roller frame at the opposite ends of the roller, are supporting wheels 21 which run upon the tracks or guides 22 secured to the tray 3.

Placed upon the diaphragm 5 are the cards 23 to which the samples are to be attached, and when the paste has been applied by the roller to the blocks 12 and the roller is carried back to rest upon the pad 20, the tablet 9 is swung upon the hinge 10 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, the paste upon the blocks 12 coming in contact with the uppermost card in the pile resting upon the diaphragm 5. By means of the foot-treadle 7 the diaphragm 5 and the cards thereon are raised to apply the paste from the blocks 12 to the upper card, after which the tablet 9 is returned to its original position, A carrying with it the top card of the pile. If desired, an operating handle 24 may be secured to the lower surface of the tablet 9, said handle projecting through an aperture in the tray 3. However, other means for this purpose may be provided. A series of compartments 25 may be utilized for holding the cards. After the paste hasbeenr applied to the card the sample strips are to be applied by a separate machine.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. In a machine of the character described, a tray, a tablet hinged thereto, a paste receptacle, a roller, a lever to which the roller is connected, a series of paste blocks upon said tablet, a vertically movable diaphragm for supporting a column of sheets of paper, means whereby said tablet may be swung to a position over the vpaper sheets, and a treadle for presenting the top sheet to the paste blocks.

2. In a machine of the character described, a tray, a paste receptacle, an absorbent pad leading from the paste receptacleto the tray,

a tablet hinged to the tray and provided with a series of paste blocks, a roller for apn plying paste to the upper surface of said blocks, a vertically movable diaphragm for supporting a series of sheets of paper, for presenting said tablet and paste blocks to the paper sheets, a vfoot treadle for moving said sheets against the blocks.

3, In a machine for applying samples to paper, the combination of a tray, a tablet, paste blocks thereon, a paste receptacle, a paste pad, a roller mounted to move overl the ad and over the paste blocks, means whereby the tablet may be inverted, a vertically movable diaphragm for supporting a series of paper sheets underthetablet, and apfoot treadle for pressing the diaphragm and zo sheets up against the pasted. blocks.

4. In a machine of the character described, a hinged tablet carrying a series of paste blocks, in combination with a paste pad, a roller, a system of pivoted levers connected 25 to said roller, bearing wheels on said roller, a track upon which said wheels are guided, means whereby said tablet may be swung into position to present the blocks to sheets of paper, and means for pressing the paper 3o against the blocks.
