ISIDOR DREYFUSS, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FOR APPLYING ADHESBVE MATERiAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,135, dated February 19, 1889.
Application tiled August l, 1888. Serial No. 281,623. (No model.)
To LZZ when?, it may concern:
Be it known .that I, ISIDGR DREYFUSS, Of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Applying Adhesive Material on Sheets, of which the following is a speeilication.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for applying adhesive substaneessuch as glue, mueilage, paste, ttc-on sheets of paper preparatory to pasting said sheets on boxes, frames, (te.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafer, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are elevations of the two sides of my improved machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
A metal or other roller, A, is mounted in verticallyadjustable journabboxes B in two side frames, C.
On one end of the shaft D, on which said roller is xed, a pinion, E, is rigidly mounted, that eng-ages the cog-wheel F, mounted loosely on a fixed pin projecting from the outer surface of one of the side frames, C. The cogwheel F engages a pinion, G, on one end pivot of a roller, lil, mounted in the frames C C, parallel with and a short distance in front of the roller A. A like roller, H, rests upon the roller H. 'A removable table or top plate, l, held in the side frames, l, in front of the rollers ll Il', the said rollers constituting the feeding device. A box, J, is mounted to slide in a horizontal slot, J, in each side frame, C, and in said box .l a doctor-roller, K, is journaled. A cleaning-doctor, L, arranged below the box J, has one edge held in contact with the doctor-roller K by suitable screws, L. A serew-rod, M, projects from each journal-box .l through the front cross-piece, N, uniting the side frames, C, and on each screw a wingn nut, M', is screwed. Each screw-rod M is surrounded by a spiral spring, O, between the inner surface of the cross-piece N and the front end of the corresponding journal-box, which springs press the doctor-roller against the roller A. On one end pivot of the doctorroller K the cog-wheel P is fixed, that engages a cog-wheel, Q, mounted on a pin on one of the side frames, C, said cog-wheel Q engaging a cog-wheel, R, fixed on that end pivot of the roller A opposite the one on which the pinion E is fixed.
Parallel with and above the roller A, I provide a roller, S, journaled in vertically-adj ustable journal-boxes T in the side frames, C. A cog-wheel, U, on one end pivot of the roller S engages the eog-wheel R.
rlhe roller A dips into the glue, paste, or other adhesive material contained in a suitable box or tray, V, held in the frame of the machine. Curved rods W have their lower ends secured to a crosspiece, 'W, uniting the side frames, C, and their upper ends rest loosely upon the cylindrical surface of the roller A. By means of suitable gearing or belting (not shown) the roller A is rotated in the direction .of the arrow 0c', and as it dips into the glue in the tray V its surface is covered with said glue. The doctor-roller K wipes oft' the surplus glue 'from the roller A, and the cleaning-doctor L in turn wipes the surplus glue from the doctor-roller K. y
By turning the nuts M the doctor-roller K can be moved. a greater or less distance from the roller A, accordingly as a greater or less quantity of adhesive material is to adhere to said roller A.
The sheets upon which the adhesive ma terial is to be applied are fed from the table I by the rollers H H', which carries them in the direction of the arrow x2 and brings them in contact with the adhesivesurface of the roller A, which in turn carries them oft in the direction of the arrow at', the roller S pressing said sheets upon the roller A.
The feed-roller ll is geared. in such a manner as to rotate slower than the roller A, so
that said roller A can spread and wipe the adhesive material upon the face of the sheetthat is, the feed-rollers feedthe paper in the direction of the arrow Q02, but do not feed it as fast as the roller A revolves, so as to cause said. roller A to wipe on the face of the paper. The sheets i'inally pass from the rollerA upon the wires ll?, down which they slide and from which they can be removed when required.
IOO
As only one side of each sheet comes in contact With the surface of the roller A, the adhesive material is applied on that side of the sheet only. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newr and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a machine for applying adhesive material on sheets of paper, the combination, with a frame, of a roller, a receptacle for the adhesive material, into which receptacle said roller extends, a doctor-roller made adj ustable toward and from the same, a cleaningdoctor resting on the cylindrical surface of Said doctoiroller, anda pair of feed-rollers, y
substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a machine for applying1 adhesive material on sheets of paper, the combination, with a frame, of the roller A, the receptacle V for the adhesive material, the doctor-roller K, the feedrollers H H the pressure-roller S,
and the guide-Wires WV, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ISIDOR DREYFUSS. Titnessesz OseAR F. GUNZ, CARL KARP.
