' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FRANK DANIEL, OF LANEBURG, ARKANSAS.
FIREPLACE SCREEN AND BLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,056, dated December 28, 1897.
I Application filed June 1, 1897. Serial No, 639,075. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANK DAN- IEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laneburg, in the county of Nevada and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplace Screens and Blowers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a fireplace-heater and fuelburner; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as set out in this specification and the claims thereunto attached.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aface view of my fireplace with my frame and hanging attachments secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of my fireplace with my frame and hanging attachments secured thereto, together with the door, latching device, and dampers hinged to the frame. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 2 on the line so 00. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
My invention is described as follows:
1 is a flat iron frame about one inch by three-eighths, which fits right around the fireplace. The front door or heater 2 fits in it just as a sash-door fits in its facing. Said door or heater 2 has hinges 3 hinging it to one side of the frame 1, and a latch 4:, by means of which itis latched to the other side of the facing when closed. The door or heater is also provided near its upper end with slidetracks 5 and near its lower end with slidetracks 6, and between said slide-tracks 5 said door is provided with perforations 7, and fitting in said tracks and adapted to move to the right or left is a slide-door 8 having perforations 9, which correspond with the perforations 7, so that said perforations 7 may be opened or closed by sliding said door 8.
The door or heater, near its lower end and between the slide-tracks 6, is provided with perforations 10, and between said slide 6 and working therein is a slide-door 11, provided with perforations 12, which correspond and register with said perforations 10, so that said perforations 10 may be opened or closed by sliding said door 11.
The upper bar of the frame 1 has adjust ably secured on each end a tube 13, by means of a thumb-screw 13' and having in their front'sides a slot 14, and against the jamb of the chimney are secured elbow-rods 15, the vertical rods 16 of which are secured to the jambs of the wall by screws, bolts, or hooks, while the horizontal ends 17 enter the outer ends of the openings of the tubes 13 and are secured therein by thumb-screws 18, and thus the frame 1 is adjustable and may be hung in different-sized fireplaces.
In the fireplace is secured a coal-basket 19. This basket, however, may be dispensed with, if desired, whenwood is burned and the ordinary andiron or other equivalent substituted.
In the throat 20 of the chimney 21 is hinged a damper 22, and on the lower side of said damper is an eye 23, so that the damper may be turned by means of the rod 24:, which has a hook on the end thereof to catch in the eye 23.. The damper is not wide enough to fit against the back of the chimney, but when closed leaves a space between its back edge and the walls of the chimney for the smoke to pass up through, while the front part of the damper throws the heat down and through the door 2. I also regulate the heat by means of the slide-doors 8 and 11.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the frame, consisting of the side and top plates, the side plates being provided at their upper ends with hori zontal tubes 13, in which the top plate is ad justably secured, with the elbow-rods 15, one end of which is secured to the jambs of the fireplace, and the other end adjustably secured to the tubes 13, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth. 2. The combination'of the frame, consisting of the side and top plates, the side plates being provided at their upper ends, with horizontal tubes 13, in which the top plate is adjustably secured, with the elbow-rods 15, one end of which is secured to the ends of the fireplace, and the other end adjustably secured to the tubes 13, and a door hinged to one of the upright plates and adapted to close the fireplace-opening, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
WILLIAM FRANK DANIEL.
