MEANS FOR BALANCING FRAMES FOR OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WM. H. WATTS 8r;
PENNSYLVANIA, A FIRM.
FIREPLACE SCREENS, BLOWERS, AND WINDOW- SASHES.
Application filed June 1, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis F. EISELE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in .Means for Balancing Frames for Fireplace Screens, Blowers, and lVindow-Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in means for balancing fire place screens, blowers, or other sash, and while the invention is particularly applicable to balancing fire place screens and blowers it will be understood that it can be used for balancing vertically sliding sash or doors without departing from the essential features of the invention.
It is necessary where open fire-places are used to provide a screen to prevent the embers from being projected into the room in which the fire-place is located and it is also essential to provide a blower for starting the fire. Devices of this type are usually built in the fire-place so as to form part of the structure.
The object of my invention is to make such a device self-contained and readily applicable so that the screen or blower can be raised or lowered and will remain at any point desired.
The device is simple in construction and takes up very little room in depth and can be placed between the wall and mantel fixtures.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1, is a face view illustrating my improved balancing device for a screen or blower, showing the screen in the raised position; Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the screen lowered, and Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
A is a frame having vertical guides a-a at each side for the sash B, which. can be raised and lowered in the guides and mount ed in the sash in the present instance is the screen 5; the mesh of the screen being of such a size as to prevent the embers from a fire passing through the screen.
When it is desired to use the device as a blower then a solid plate is substituted for the screen I). A is the solid back of the frame inclosing practically one-half of the frame and a is a cross bar extending in front of the frame; the upper half of the Specification of Letters Patent.

frame being mounted back of the mantel construction so that it is not in view; the only exposed portions being the side guides a d. The lower cross bar a is preferably embedded in the tiling of the hearth. Pivoted to the cross bar a at d is a weighted arm D having a roller d which travels in a slot 72 in the upper end of the sash B. (Z is a weight for counterbalancing the frame and part of the sash. Pivoted to the back plate A at e is a weighted arm E similar to the arm D and having a roller 6 adapted to a slot 5 in the upper end of the sash and provided with a weight 6 which tends to counterbalance the frame and part of the sash. The two weights d and 6 counterbalance the entire sash so that it can be raised and held in any position desired. These weighted arms are very thin and take up comparatively little room so as not to interfere with the ordinary fire-place and mantel construction. When the fire-place is being built space is left for this screen or blower structure, which is set in position and covered by the tiling and the mantel and where it is desired to use both a blower and a screen, then two of these devices may be placed, one back of the other, one having the blower sash therein and the other the fire screen sash, though in some instances a single frame may be used provided with two sashes, one containing the solid plate as a blower and the screen.
While my invention is particularly adapted for use in balancing fire-placescreens or blowers, it can be used for balancing window sash. The sash can be made in two sections, one moving into a boX at the top down half-way of the window frame, and the other moving in a box at the bottom and extending half-way up the window frames, and the two sash can be tongued and grooved and fastened together in the closed position by any suitable device.
I claim z- I 1. The combination in a fire place screen or blower, of a frame adapted to be mounted in the fire place; vertical guides at each side of said frame; a sash containing the screen or blower adapted to the said guides; and two weighted arms, one arm pivoted at the back of the frame and the other arm pivoted at the front of the frame, said arms being independent of each other and con.-
nected to the sash, whereby the sash, when raised, will pass between the arms.
2. The combination in a fire-place screen or blower, of a frame adapted to be mounted in the fire-place, said frame having a solid back, a cross bar extending in front of the frame, Vertical guides at each side of the frame, a sash containing the screen or blower adapted to the said guides, slots in the upper portion of the sash, two weighted arms having projections, the projection of one arm entering one slot of the sash and the projection of the other arm entering the other slot of the sash, one of said weighted arms being pivoted to the back plate and 15 the other to the cross bar whereby the screen or blower, when raised, can pass between the two weighted arms.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence 20 of two subscribing witnesses.
