Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES EWING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED CLAMPS FOR WASH-BASINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,572, dated November l 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES EWING, of the city of New York, in the county of N ew York, in the State of New York. have invented a new and Improved Basin Clamp or Bracket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying' drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, the dra-wing representing' a vertical central section.
The object of my invention is to secure permanentl)` the basin to the ma-rble slab; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. A represents the marble slab; B, the basin; fj', the ilanges of the basin c, the basin clamp or bracket; d, the bolts, and e the nuts. The bolts are made with an oblong head or T shape, which are let into the under side of the slab the required distance, and secured therein by lead or cement. Between the slab and the flan ges of the basin I also use cement, the basin being put in its place while the cement is soft or plastic. The clamps c c arethen put on the bolts, and by means of the nuts c e are screwed rmly to the marble. p
My improvement in basin-clamps consists in making them out of sheet-brass or other sheet metal, by stamping or pressing` in dies of the proper shape and size, then placing them, one at a time, between two dies to produce the desired eorrugations or indentations, the rim or edge being turned up nearly at right angles; or the whole can be eliected at one operation by proper appliances. By indentin g the clamp and turning up the rim or edge I secure more strength than can be had under the ordinary cast clamp. The highest turned up portion of the rim prevents the clamp from canting or the nut t'rom being too much tightened.
I construct my bolts out of brass wire or other metal rod, rolled or drawn of the desired length and thickness, and by means of proper clamps or vise give to them the oblong or T- shaped head, as represented in the drawing.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the clamp c', of sheet metal, stamped to receive the form, substantially as set forth, for the purpose of securing basins to marble slabs by the nut d, as specified. y
JAMES EWING.
