TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it'known that I, WILLIAM BROWN, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesc'i, and State of Connectir" A out, have invented. an Improved Metallic Grommets for Sails; and I 'do hereby declare hat the following, taken in connect-ion with the 'drawings which accompany and foin part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practise it.
The metallic grommet, as usually made, consists of a tube and ilange formed integ'rall like a common cyelet, and a ring which lits over the tube, the tube being` pushed through the hole made forit in-the snl, bringing the flange to a bearing upon one side of the ring, being slipped over the end of the tube upon the opposite side of the sail, so that by turning over the tube upon the ring, all the part-s are secured tightly to the sail.
My invention consists informing the flange and tube or eyelet in two parts, the tube being formed of sheet-V ,bra-ss tubing, and the ilange ci' metal cast upon the tube. `This constnuction admits of the use of a cheap castV metal to form the ilenge, while the tube is made of better or wroughtmetal plate that will admit of ready bend`V ing to clinch the eyelet over the ring and to the sail. I
r The drawings represent a metallic grommetembodying the inventionA representing a section of the same, nudB showing its application to a piece of sail. a denotes the tube, and b the flange, the two constituting the l eyelet, as shown at.A. The .tube is formed tapering, and :it its largest end is struck out or flared, as seen at e,
, and upon the outer surface of this are the ange b is cest, as seen in the drawings, the eyelet so formed being applied to the sail,`and secured tothe sume and to the `ring d, by striking out and down the outer end of the t tube' in theqlsual manner, as seen at B.. While prefer to umke the .tube a of sheet bra-ss, the flange or rim b maybe made of any cheap nieta-l which, when cast, will possess sui'licient rigidity fo1 therequirements thereof, and the sheet-tube may be secured to the cast-rnetal ange by forming` the `casting with a rccess, and stamping aJ enge from the tube clown into such recess in a drop-press.
I claim the improved groinmet having a cast-metal flange united, substantially as described,` to a. sheetmetal tube.
WILLIAM BROWN.
