BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,271, dated November 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHRYSTIE F. NICHOL- SON, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Buokle,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in buckles, principally for belts and like articles; and the object is to provide abuckle that will be comparatively cheap to manufacture, light in its construction, but strong and serviceable.

I will describe a buckle embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a top plan View of a buckle-blank embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking downward. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing portions of the buckle as folded. Fig. 4 shows the completed buckle as attached to a belt, and Fig. 5 is a section through the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.

In carrying out my invention I form a blank from suitable sheet metal. This blank, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises a loop portion 1, having an integral short tongue 2 at its inner central portion, and in stamping out the blank the pointed end of the tongue will be stamped up from the body portion of the loop, thus representing the ordinary swinging tongue. At the rear end of the loop is a transverse bar 3, from which a tang at extends forward and is intended, in afinished buckle, to be formed into a hook. Rearward of the bar 3 is a beltattaching bar 5, and rearward of the beltattaching bar is a comparatively wide slideforming bar 6. The space between the bars 5 and 6 is substantially equal to the width of the bar 6, so that when the slide-forming bar is turned into position a sufficient space will be provided underneath it for the passage of the end of a belt or the like, as will hereinafter appear. Extended laterally of the blank, in line with the bar 6 and of a width substantially that of said bar 6, are ears 7, and extended rearward of the blank at the ends of the bar 6 and at right angles thereto are cars 8 for forming the front walls of boxings at the ends of the slide-bar.

In forming a buckle from the blank the tang 4: will be turned downward and rearward to form a hook 9. The rear portion of the blank will be turned up substantially on the lines so, the bar 6 will be turned forward on the lines y, and then the ears 7 and S will be turned downward, and thus a boxing closed at three sides will be formed at the ends of the bar 6.

It will be seenthat a buckle embodying my invention may be cheaply and quickly made, that its general outline may be of any desired shape, and that it may be highly ornamented without adding to its costof production.

In using the buckle in connection with a belt one end of the belt may be loosely looped over or sewed to the bar 5, and in fastening the belt a metal loop 10 at the free end of the belt will be engaged with the hook 9, with the end of the belt passed through the buckleloop and underneath the slide-forming bar, as plainly shown in the drawings. It will be 'noted in Fig. 4: that the tongue 2 has the appearance of passing through the belt material, and it is obvious that a greater number of tongues may be provided, if desired.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A buckle-blan k, formed of a single piece of metal, and comprising a loop portion, a tongue extended inward from the loop portion, a transverse bar at the rear portion of the loop having a hook-forming tang, a belt-attachin g bar rearward of the tang-bar, a slideforming bar rearward of the belt-fastening bar, and ears projected rearward at the ends of the slide-formin g bar, substantially as specified.

2. A buckle-blank, formed of a single piece of metal, and comprising a loop portion, a tongue extended inward from the loop portion, a transverse bar at the rear portion of the loop and having a hook-forming tang, a beltfastening bar, a loop-forming bar, ears extended rearward at the ends of the loop-forming bar, and ears extended laterally in line with the loop-forming bar, substantially as specified.

3. A buckle, consisting of a single piece of metal, and eomprisinga loop portion, a tongue portion extended inward from the front bar of the loop, a transverse bar at the rear portion of the loop, a hook on said bar, a beltattaohing bar rearward of the hook-bar, a slide-bar turned forward above the plane of the loop, ears turned downward at the ends 10 of the last-named bar to form the front Walls of boxings at the ends of the bar, and ears forming the end Walls of said boxings, substantially as specified.
