Description

UNITED. STATES PATENT Orr'ronx ROBERT T. KNIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED SPRlNG FOR CLOSING DOORS.
Specification forming port of Letters Patent N0. 59.414, dcted November 6, 186e.
To all whom it may co'nce'm:
Be it known that I, R. T. KNIGHT, of Phila.-
delphia., Penns rlvenie., have invented an ImF prcvement in elf -Glosing Doors; and l do hereby declare the foilowngto be a. full, clear, and exact description of the seme, reference being had to the nccompenyingdrnwings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of e spring contained Within n. recess. formed in the door nini etteched at one end to the letter and at the opposite end to a stationary pin on which the door turn s', all substantially as described hereinefter; also, of adetsehnble grooved strip secured to the edge of the-docr` end arranged in respect to the spring .as hereinafter de scribed, lthe spring notingy es en eicicnt medium for automatically elosin g the door, and et the seine time being'conceaied from view.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to malte and npply my invention, vI will now proceed to describe its construction nud oper. ation.
0n reference to the accompanying drnw-= Y ings, whichform e port of this specification,
Figure 1 is e front view oi n. door -frame ond n door, partly in sect-ion, with my improve nent Fig'. 2, the seme as Fig. l, showing the door in a. diierent position and' part of it removed to show'the spring; end Fig. 3, e plan view, partly in section.
A represents the door, end B and B the two jembs, and C the lintel of o door-frame, within which is hung o door, D. Toons edge of the door is secured e detachable strip, D', which is rounded on the outside, as shown in Fig. 3. The inner ffl-ce of the strip D' and the edge of the door to which the strip is ett-sched 4cre groeven, so es to form a. vertical recess cr chamber, X, into which project two brackets, c and a', on the edge of the door.y
To the lieorA is secured opiate, b, c pointed projection, o, on which extends into e recess in e. plate, d, secured to the lower edge of the door D, and through the bracket a and through n. plate, f, securedto`the"uppe'r edge of the door, extends-n. piu, g, which is prevented frmturnng by its sqnalr'eend e project'- ing into a square 'recess in e plate, i, secured to the onder side of' the lintel C.
To the lowerendv of the pin g and to the bracket a' are secured the opposite ends of e spring, h", the latter consisting, in the present instance; of a narrow lint strip of steel, which when the door is closed, is stroightand in e liuc with the a-xs of the'door. "As ene-end of the spring is secured to the door end the other to the stationery pin g, any change in the position oi' the door will-twist the spring, es
vshown in Fip. 3, so that when the door is relensedv it will be at once closed by the recoil of the spring. As the spring is contained in the door it cannot he readily tmnpercd wit At the saine time, being concerned, it has not the unsightly appearance presented by qxposed docrspringe.l A spring consisting of ze two or more pereilel rods or wires secured to the pin gend to, the bracket a' may be substituted for thespring described. hed to the spring citer removing the strip D'. l claim es my invention end desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. .A spring, h, contained within a. recess or chamber formed in thejdocnend `attached et one end to a. projection on the door and et the other to e stationary pin on which the door turns, ell substantially as set forth'.
2. The detachable giruoved strip D', or ranged on the edge of the door in respect to the spring cs set forth.
In testimony whereof 1 here signed my neme to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT T. KNIGHT.
Witnesses GHLnLns E. Fos'rnn, Jomi WHITE.
