HAIR-CRIMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,679, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed April 12J 1897. Serial No. 631,831. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BENJAMIN NICH- OLSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Curling the Hair or Mustache, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draW-- view of the device, showing it in open position Fig. 4

Referring to the drawings, A designates the body portion of the device, which comprises acylindrical member a, to one end of which is hinged, as at a, a concave leaf a The hinged member a is adapted to rest over and partially surround the member a when the device is in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At the free end of the hinged leaf or it is provided with spring side Walls a a which are adapted to bind or clamp the sides of the cylindrical member a to retain the parts together, and the end of the member a is provided with a projecting joint a, which may be readily engaged with the fingaging the clamping connection between the members a and a.
.To the body portion A of the device is connected at the hinged joint a a hinged springloop B, which forms a handle when the body portion of the device is open for the reception of the hair and is adapted to be swung upon its hinged joint, so that its end is connected With the outer end of the member a when the device is closed. The loop B thus forms an outer retaining-frame for the hair.
The member a may be provided with a projecting recessed end of, into which recess the spring-loop B may be sprung. In lieu of this recessed end a knob 01. may be formed upon the end of the member a and be engaged by a supplementary spring-loop I), provided upon the free end of the loop B, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
Projecting nibs b b may be provided upon the side arms of the spring-loop B, which will serve to retain the device in position upon a lamp-chimney if the heating of the body of the device should under any circumstances be desired.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. When the device is opened to the position shown in Fig. 3, the outer spring-loop or frame B forms a handle and the hair may be wrapped around the cylindrical body member a. The hinged leaf a may then be clamped down in position upon the cylindrical member a with the hair inclosed between, when the spring-loop B is carried over to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and engaged with the outer end of the body portion, so that it forms an outer retaining-frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved device of the class described, comprising the body having a cylindrical member formed with a catch device at its outer end and a concave leaf in hinged connection with said cylindrical member provided at its free end with spring-clamping walls or projections and a projecting nib or point, in combination with a spring-loop hinged to said body portion and adapted to be sprung into engagement with the catch devices at the outer end of the cylindrical member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
