Description

RICHARD COVINGTON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN sHUTTER-HINGES.
Speciticaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,365, dated November 6, 1866.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R101-IARD COVINGTON, of Washington City, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Hinge for I *lasteningl Shutters at Various Angles with the Wall; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis an elevation of the hinge, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are plans ofthe same. Fig. 5 is another method of Working and constructing the same invention, and is an elevation of the hinge, Figs. 6, 7, and 8 being plans of the same.
In Fig. l, aand b are arcs of circles (or b may be attached to the hinge at all parts of its inner circle as well as at one end) with a common center, c, the arc o being attached at one end to the side al ot the hinge, and the arc b to the side e, The touching surfaces of these arcs have in each semicircular vertical recesses, each ot' which will at various angles of the shutter ind a corresponding recess, forming together a circular hole, into whicha pin is dropped to fasten the hinge in that position.
There is a hole in each side ot' the hinge to admit the arc attached to the opposite side.
In Fig. 5, a is a little more than the half of a solid cylinder, the diameter of which is seen in the plans, cast solid onto one side, b, ofthe hinge, and in the closing of the hinge passingthrough a corresponding space cut ont of the side c of the hinge. On the face ofn this cylinder a there are vertical semicircular recesses,
Y each of which, .on reaching the edge l of the side c of the hin ge, finds a corresponding semicircular recess, forming together a hole, into
