Description
(No ModeL) W. C. NELSON.
REIN HOLDER No. 592,994. Patented Nov. 2,1897.
.UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea.
VILLIAM CLARK NELSON, OF SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
Ram-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,994, dated November 2, 189'?.
Application inea April 13, 1897.
To ali whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLARK NEL- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine. I
The object oi this invention is to provide an improved rein-holder which is cheap, simple, and effective, the particular construction of the device permitting it to be made of but two parts, not including the rivets which secure it in place.
Vlth the above objects in view I have constructed a rein-holder one part of Which is made up of a sheet orstrip of metal bent to form a loop to embrace the edge of the dashboard and an open frame, the other part of the device presenting a plate having pins by which it is pivoted in the open frame of the other part of the device, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and speciiically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the reinholder, and Fig. 3 is a detail View with the parts separated.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates the main part of the rein-holder, which is made up of a strip of sheet metal, one end of which iS bent into a loop 2, from which it is bent outwardly at an angle and then formed into a. rectangular frame pre.
Serial N0. 631,904. (No model.)
5 designates a. plate which is provided at opposite sides with projecting pins 6, and this plate is placed in engagement with the part l of the device by passing the pins into the openings or bearings 4 iu the side pieces 3. lVhen the plate 5 is pivoted Within the frame, as herein shown and described, it provides a gravity dog or catch to engage the reins and clamp the same between one end of said plate and the adjoining end of the frame. This securely holds the reins by frictional contact. In placing the 'reinsin engagement with the de vice they are passed through the vertical opening and rst swing the plate upon its pivot and then pass in between the said plate and outer portion of the frame, which insures the proper contact for clamping the reins between the parts, the plate being moved by gravity in engaging the reins. It Will be noted that it is not necessary to manipulate the plate in placing the reins in engagement with the device, as the normal inclination of said plate will permit the reins to bear against the inclined edge and swing the plate automatically.
By the particular construction of the device herein shown and described I provide a very cheap arrangement, which can be readily applied to the dashboard of a vehicle and in its construction can be made to present an ornamental appearance.
It Will be understood, of course, that a device constructed in accordance With my invention need not be limited to the single use or application as a rein-holder, for it could be applied for other purposes-for instance, las a holder for clothes-lines or as a lock for the operating-cord of a Window-shade. It could be also applied to the handle oi' a cultivator, barrow, or other agricultural implement for holding the reins thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A rein-holder made up of two plates of metal, one of which is bent to present alooped portion, and an open-ended frame adjoining the same, Jthe terminal of the portion forming IOO the frame being turned outward adjoining the gravity-dog, the parts being constructed and opening `While the intermediateportion of theV organized as herein shown and described. plate forms an inclined surface which leads In testimony whereof I have signed this to said opening; the other plate forminga pivspecification in the presence of two subscrib- 5 oted gravity-dog located within the frame to ing Witnesses.
one side of the opening and engaging the lower end of the forward part of said frame; l WILLIAM CLARK NELSON the looped portion of the device having bolt-V Witnesses: Y holes while in opposite sides of the frame are DAVID A. ENDICOTT,
' Io formed bearing openings or recesses for the ED. C. BARHAM.
