' PATENT FFICE,
MlTER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 592,874, dated November 2, 1897. Application filed March 24, 1897. Serial No. 628,987. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. MAXSON,Of Mc- Oune, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in miter-boxes and in attachments therefor, the object being to provide in a simple and inexpensive manneran attachment whichcan be readily applied to the miter-boxes now in use and by means of which the saw will be guided more accurately and right and left hand miters and straight ends may be given to the boards.
To these ends my invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts whereby the above and other important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a miter-box having my invention applied thereto, showing the parts in position to cut a right-hand miter. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in position to cut a left-hand miter, and- Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the attachment.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents a initer-box, which may be of any ordinary or usual construction, the side 2 thereof being provided with a vertical slot 3 and the side i with the slots 5, 6, and 7, the former of which lies in a direct line with the slot 3, while the two latter are arranged at each side thereof and are intended for use in sawing right and left hand miters. It will be noticed that both edges of the slot 3 are beveled inwardly, and this formation permits of free movement of the saw when used for either a right or left hand miter, while the intermediate slot 5 is used when the boards are cut off square.
A bracket 8 is secured to one side of the miter-box in any convenient manner, the up per portion of which is bent so as to bring its end above the slot 3, and a clamp 9 is pivotally connected to the said bracket by means of the screw 9, passing through the openings therein and an elongated opening in the bracket, its threaded end being provided with a tightening-nut 9 The extreme end of the bracket 8 is provided with a curved slot 10, having a lateral offset, and through this slot and openings in the clamp the shank of a screw 10* passes, its threaded end being provided with a tightening-nut 10 This construction admits of a pivotal movement of the clamp 9, and the offset in the curved slot 10 will serve to prevent this pivotalmovement, when so desired, by moving the clamp so as to bring the shank of the screw 1O" into engagement therewith.
A split collar 11 is arranged within the clamp 9, being provided with a square central opening extending its entire length, which receives within it a bar 12, the lower end of which is divided to admit of the blade of the saw, and the extremities of this divided end are provided with laterally-arranged shoes which are adapted to give a greater bearing-surface to the saw and thus serve to keep it steadier. The collar is free to move within the clamp, so that the bar may be moved to bring the division therein in position to receive the saw when it is intended to give a right or left hand miter to the board, andwhen so adjusteda set-screw 12 in the clamp will be turned to secure it in that position, and at the same time the nuts on the clamp-screws used to secure the clamp to the bracket 8 will be tightened, which will cause the clamp to be drawn so as to tighten it around the collar and secure the bar in the desired position.
It will thus be seen that my invention provides in a simple and inexpensive manner an attachment which may be readily used in connection with the ordinary miter-boxes which is not easily gotten out of order and which can be quickly adjusted to bring the parts in proper position for use in forming a right or left hand miter or in truing off the ends of the boards.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a miter-box having a slot at one side thereof and a series of slots at the other side, a guide-bar being divided at its lower extremity to receive the saw, and a split collar provided with an opening to receive said guide-bar, of a clamp engaging said collar, and having openings, and screws adapted to pass through said openings, and openings in a bracket secured to the side of the miter-box, substantially as described.
2. A miter-box, having a vertical slot at one side thereof, the edges of which are beveled, and a slot arranged upon the opposite side in a direct line therewith, and slots arranged at each side thereof, and a bracket arranged upon one side of the miter-box the upper end of which is provided with a curved and elongated opening, the former having an JAMES A. MAXSON.
