T. HAROLD. ADJUSTABLE PANEL MITER BOX.
No) 534,647. Patented Peb. 26, 18.95.
UNITED STATES A PATENT EETCE.
THOMAS HAROLD, OF VANCOUVER, OANADA,IASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T O JOHN MCCOLL, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE PANEL lVlITER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,647, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed March Z2, 1894.
To all whom, zit may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS HAROLD, a British subject, residing at the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Panel Miter-Box, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable miter boxes; and it has for its object to effect certain improvements in miter boxes of thatcharacter, especially adapted for making bevels for panel work.
To this end the main and primary object of the invention is to provide a new and useful miter box that shall be simple, light, and durable, while at the same time being so con- Y structed as to make provision for a right and left hand cut of the wood with but a single adjustment of the box, andalso to be so arranged as to be adapted for being directly applied to the panel to be itted, and thereby dispensing with the use of the ordinary bevel for finding the angle to be fitted, and to which angle the miter box is to be adjusted.
The invention also contemplates a construction of miter box in connection with which any kind of straight saw can be used.
With these and other objects in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a plan View of an adjustable miter box constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the adjustable side plates of the box. sectional view on the line y-y of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line z-z of Fig. l.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates an elongated metallic base plate provided with the separate longitudinally disposed slots 2 and 3, respectively, the slot 2,
extending for a greater portion of the length of said base plate out' to one end thereof, and the shorter slot 3 being disposed at the end of the plate 1, opposite to the end to which the slot 2 extends. The said base plate 1 -is Fig. 4 is a detail Serial No. 504,747. (No model.)
further provided at one side of its center with the offstanding side quadrant extensions 4, over which Work the separate adjustable side plates 5 of the miter box. The side plates 5, areprovided with the bifurcated ends (j, that loosely embrace the side quadrant extensions 4, of the base plate 1, and the bifurcated extremities of the said adjustable side plates 5, are pivotally secured together and to the base plate l, between the slots 2 and 3, by the single pivot pin 7, that allows for the simultaneous adjustment of said side plates 5. The
said side plates 5 have a circular adjustment over the quadrants 4, at opposite sides of the base plate 1, and the said side plates are further provided at one side edge with the upwardly disposed side rest anges 8, against which the molding or material to be cut rests when placed in the miter box for being operated-upon by thesaw, andthe said adjustable side plates 5 are adapted to have placed on top of the same against the side flanges 8, thereof', the wooden facing strips 9, that serve to protect the saw by preventing the same from coming in contact with the metal side plates, as will be readily understood. The side plates 5, are further provided at their inner side edges intermediate of their ends with the offstanding pivot lugs 10, to which are pivotally connected the inner ends of the opposite curved connecting links 11, the other outer ends of which are pivotally connected to the thumb adjusting screw 12, mounted to slidev in the long slot 2 in the baseplate 1, and adapted to clamp the connected ends of the links 11, tight onto the base plate 1, in any adjusted position. So in order to adjust the side plates 5 of the miter box to and away from the base plate 1, it is simply necessary to loosen the thumb screw 12, and to adjust the same longitudinally within the slot 2, until the desired adjustment of the side plates 5 is secured, and then the said thumb screw is tightened.
By reason of the fact that one end of the side plates 5, is bifurcated as at 6, a portion of the plates work both above and also below the side quadrant extensions 4, of the base plate 1, and it will be readily understood that the portions of the side plates 5, that work below the quadrant extensions 4, can be fitted ICO directly to the panel for which the bevels are to be cut, and by adjusting the side plates 5, so that the portions thereof below the quadrant extensions 4, will fit in the angle of the panel, the proper adjustment of said side arms may be secured without the use of the ordinary bevel, as is now commonly used, and after having been adj usted to the proper angle the molding or strips to be mitered or beveled are first placed on one side plate and then upon the other in the usual way for the mitering saw to operate thereupon, and to provide means for limiting the adjustment of the side plates 5, for the purpose of making a square cut on the molding or other material to be sawed, the side quadrant extensions 4, are provided at their outer angles with the upwardly disposed stop flanges or lugs 13, against which the flanged sides are adapted to engage when adjusted at direct right angles to the length of the base-plate 1.
The slots 2 and 3 respectively at opposite sides of the single pivot pin 7, are adapted to have adjustably mounted therein the tubular socket castings 14. The tubular castings 14, are adapted to be engaged at their under sides by the headed adjusting screws 15, working in the slots of the base plate and adapted to bind against the said base plate at the lower edges of the slot, to provide for holding the tubular socket castings in any adj usted position. The tubular socket castings 14, that are mounted forlongitudinal adjustment at different points on the base plate 1, in the manner described, are provided at diametrically opposite sides with the screw slots 16, through which are adapted to pass the securing screws 17, engaging in the duplicate semi-cylindrical saw guide blocks 18, that are fitted into the socket castings 14, and are adapted to accommodate the mitering saw for movement therebetween, it of course being understood that the saw slot or space between the blocks 18 of each saw guide are in longitudinal alignment with each other to provide for properly receiving the saw. The said socket castings 14 are also provided in their opposite sides at diametrically opposite points with the saw slots 19, communicating with or openinginto the slots between the semi-cylindrical saw ity of a cushion for the saw topreventinjury to the teeth thereof.
From the above it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described adjustable miter box will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an adjustable miter box, an elongated base plate provided with separate long and short slots, and at one side of its center with opposite integral offstanding side quadrant extensions having upwardly disposed stop lugs or flanges 13 at their outer angles, a pair of circularly adjustable side plates provided with bifurcated ends loosely embracing and working over both sides of said quadrant extensions, the portions of said side plates that work at one side of' the quadrant extensions being adapted to be fitted directly to the work for which the bevels are to be cut, the extremities of said bifurcated ends being pivotally joined to the base plate between the slots thereof, said side plates being further provided at one side edge with upwardly disposed rest flanges, wooden facing strips fitted on top of said side plates, a thumb screwmounted in the long slot of said base plate, connecting links connected at one end to said thumb screw and pivotally at their other ends to the said side plates intermediate of their ends, and separate aligned saw guides mounted for adjustment in the slots of said base plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a miter box, the combination with a base plate having separate longitudinal slots and circularly adjustable side plates mounted on said base plate; of socket castings mounted for longitudinal adj ustment on said base plate over the slots thereof and provided with separate pairs of diametrically opposite screw slots and saw slots, adjusting screws working through the slots of the base plate and connected to the said socket castings, duplicate semi-cylindrical saw guide blocks fitted in said socket castings, securing screws passed through the screw slots of the castings and engaging said blocks, and cushion washers fitted in the bottom of said socket castings below said blocks, substantially as set forth.
