SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,654, dated October 12, 1897.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. LEWIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Ranges, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which'- l Figure 1 is a central longitudinal vertical section of a range made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2is a sectional plan view indicated by the line II II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View indicated by the line III III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail plan View of the smoke-conduit. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating a modified construction of conduit.

My invention relates to cooking ranges or stoves, and has particular reference to the construction and means employed by which the range may be set up so as to be used as a right or left hand range without changing the.

location of the smoke-pipe, and in this respect it constitutes a reversible range adapted to be rapidly and easily changed from right to left hand, or vice versa, without altering or removing any of the parts.

Referring to the drawings, 2 is a rectangular base or frame resting upon suitable legs 3 and provided at its middle portion with a smoke-conduit 4, extending out to one side of the base, upwardly turned and terminating in a flue 5, upon which is located theV usual stovepipe 6, the conduit having a cleaningdoor 4'.

In the principal figures of the drawings the conduit 4 is provided with a4 central circular opening 7 through its upper surface, such surface being on a plane with and a continuation of the surface of the base 2.

The main body portion of the range conforms to the Well-known customary type of household ranges, having at its forward end a fuel-chamber 8, upper combustion-chamber 9, back vertical and lower

It is obvious that the iiange 14 may project upwardly from the base into opening 13 with equally good results.

A surrounding partition 14 on each side of opening 13, meeting at an apex 15, divides the lue 1l into branches 16 16, with a common space 17 leading into the opening 13 and to conduit 4. Thus .the products of combustion from the fuel-chamber will traverse chamber 9,

10 and 11, passages 16 16, and space 17, heating the interior 12 of the range and finally issuing into the conduit, from which exit is made through the pipe 6.

The bottom portion of the range corresponds in dimensions to the base 2, upon which it rests, and When in position the flange 14 Will prevent it from shifting, While lugs 13 at the back of the base 2 project up slightly above the lower edge and serve to more securely retain the range in position. In this manner it will be seen that the base and pipe may be placed in a suitable position with relation to the wall-flue and that the range may be placed thereon with the front to the left, as shown, or to the right, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the central position of the

7 and 13 causing them to coincide in either position, the side edges also alining with each other.

In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification in which the conduit 4 is provided with opposite diagonal branches 19, equidistant from the center upon one of two intersecting diagonale and terminating in the common conduit 4". In such construction the opening 13 in the bottom of the range is located so as to coincide with either of such openings in a right or left hand position of the range, the other opening being covered by the flat bottom of the range or any suitable covering.

The advantages of my invention will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, as the range maybe originally set up in the desired position and afterward changed by simply raising the range from the base and reversing it thereon, the Weight and intertitting flange IOO 14 serving to keep it in position Without the use of bolts or screws or other parts liable to rust, warping, or breakage.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination, in a range, of a base portion having a lateral conduit leading to the stovepipe and an opening in the top communicating with the lateral conduit; and a body portion, reversible relatively to the base portion, constructed and arranged to rest upon the base portion, having an opening in its bottom communicating with the smokei'lue of the range and adapted when the two parts are placed together to register with the opening in the base portion.

The combination, in a range, of a base portion having a lateral conduit leading to the stovepipe and an opening in the top cornmunicating with the lateral conduit; a body portion, reversible relatively to the base portion, constructed and arranged to rest upon the base portion,'having an opening in its bottom communicating with the smoke-hue of the range and adapted when the two parts are placed together to register with the open-- ing in the base portion; and lugs for holding the top portion and base portion in proper position With relation to each other.
