WATER BACK FOB HOT-AIR .AND OTHER FURNACES.
Application :tiled February 27, 1922. Serial No. 539,463.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, JOSEPH HoPrnN- 'tirannia and CHARLns H. FISCHER, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tater Baci; for Hot-Air and Other Furnaces, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention consists of a water back for a hot air and hot water heater, a furnace, or the like, the same being adapted to be supported on a member within the fire pot of the heater, etc., so as to relieve the water supply andy outlet pipes of so supporting the water baclr.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit o-r scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a water back embodying our invention.
Figure 2 represents a perspective view thereof partly broken away.
Figure 3 represents a vertical section on line 3 3, Figure l.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the gures.
Referring to the drawing.
1 designates the water back which comprises a hollow body formed of the front wall 2, the rear wall 3, the side walls 4, the bottom wall 5, the cap plate 6 at the top, the interior diaphragm 7 which depends from the underside of the cap plate to near the bottoni of the body so as to form the passage S between the lower end of said diaphragm and the bottom forming a communication between the opposite side portion of said body, for the attachment of the pipe 10 which supplies water to the body between the opposite side portions of said body the nipple 11 on said cap plate opposite to nipple 9 for the attachment of the pipe 12 for the outlet of the hot water from the body tothe place of service, said pipes 10 and 12 being shown dotted in Figure 1, and the flange 13, the latter being a rearward or outward extension of the cap plate 6.
It will be seen owing to the diaphragm the nipple 9 on the cap plateof the body, flows through the passage 8` and enters the other side portion of the body and rises therein to its outlet, whereby it` is doubly-subjected, due to its two courses, to the heat of the furnace, the effect of which is evident.
On the interior of the wall 14 of the heater, etc., is the horizontally extending shoulder 15 on whichthe flange l3-is seated and so the water back is firmly and properly supported on said Harige suspended within the fire pot, and the pipes 10 and 12 are relieved of any material weight of the water back, and the openings in the' wall 14 through the upper part of which said pipes pass are not liable to be strainel and enlarged by any downward pull-of thewater back since such pull is imposed by the flange .13 on' the shoulder 15 but as said pipes pass through the adjacent portion of the wall 14 above the water back they assist in retaining the latter against the wall 14 and so steady it in position.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. A water back for a heater of the character stated having a vertically-disposed body, and a closing cap plate provided with a flange outwardly extended for contact with an offset shoulder within the furnace, there being a depending diaphragm within the body extending to nearly the bottom.
2. A water back for a heater comprising a hollow body, a cap plate forming the closure for the upper end thereof, said body having a depending diaphragm extended nearly to the bottom, and said cap plate having a lateral flange projecting beyond the wall of the said bod-y for seating on an offset shoulder member within the irepot of the heater whereby said water back isV suspendedv within the firepot.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a'water back for a heater comprising a hollow body vertically elongated and having a cap plate constituting a closure for the upper en d thereof and provided with a lateral flange, and a verticaldiaphragm withformed with a vertical diaphragm terminating at a distance from the bottom of the 10 body, said body being dependently supportedl and the cap plate having inlet and outlet npplesdisposed upon opposite sides of said diaphragm.
JOSEPH HOPFENTHALER. CHARLES H. FISCHER.
