MATHIAS STRIGKER, on VINGENNES, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SCALDING HOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,093, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS STRmxER, of Vincennes, Knox county, State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Scaldiug Hogs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts The object of this invention is to supply a cheap and convenient device for scalding hogs when butchered, enabling farmers to perform this operation much more expeditiously and perfectly than by the ordinary methods.
A A represent a rectangular box or boiler,
' about six feet long and three broad, more or less, in dimensions, as required, constructed of iron, or wood and iron combined, Within and upon which is hung a cradle formed of curved iron bars or rods a a, reaching to the bottom and extending 'from one side to the other of the boiler or box A A. The cradle-rods a a are attached at each end to the sides of .a frame, I) b, which sets on the top of the box or boiler, and is hinged at d, Fig. 2, on one side, so that it can be raised easily by handles 0 c at each end, and inverted outside of the boiler.
The boiler A A is set over a long brick or stone furnace-flue, which any farmer can readily build for himself,'and on the side of it is placed a bench or table of convenient height for scraping and cleaning the hog. Or the boiler may be made wholly of wood and set aside from the furnace, so that the water may be heated in it by means of circulating-pipes connected with a pot over the fire.
The cradle being turned to set in the box A A, the hog is placed in it and submerged in the boiling water, and when it is sufticiently scalded in the usual way for removing the hair and bristles, the cradle is reversed and the hog turned out upon the table or bench to be cleaned. Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The box or boiler A A, combined with the swinging cradle, for submergin g a hog in the scalding water within, and turning the scalded hog out on a side bench or table by reversing the cradle, constructed and arranged substan tially as herein described.
