Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907'.
.l z illcatirm filed PebruaryZS. 1907- Sel'ial No. 358,915.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. M nxnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albright, in the county of Preston. and State of IVest Virginia, have invented. a new and use tul Device for Handling and Scalding II ogs, oi which the following is a specitication.
This invention has relation to devices for handling and scalding hogs and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement ol its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby heav hogs may be easily and readily lifted and handled at the time that they are slaughtered and when scalded and when carried away from the scalding tank to be dressed.
The device consists primarily of a tank above which is erected a frame. A cradle is arranged to move vertically within the frame and enter the said tankf A windlass is mounted upon the frame and ropes wind about said windlass and pass over elevated pulleys and connect with the cradle. The frame is so constructed that it may be easily and readily detached from the tank. An elevated tlat section is connected with said frame and at points beyond the 'lrame is supported by collapsible supports. Thus when the device is not in use the parts may be easily and readily separated or knocked down and will require but little room for storage purposes.
In the accon'ipanying drawing z Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a. top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
The apparatus consists of the tank 1 which is preferably oblong in horizontal section. The said tank is provided upon the outer surfaces of its ends with the pockets 2. The lower ends of the uprights 3 lit in said pockets and the said uprights 'lorm portions ot a frame which is located over the tank. The tank is provided with a suitable lining 4 and the guides 5 are attached to the uprights 3 and pass down into the tank. The windlass 6 is attached to one of the uprights 3 and the ropes 7 wind upon said windlass. Said ropes pass over the elevated pulleys S, 8 and are attached at their ends to the bails 9. Said bails in turn being attached to the ends of the parallel bars 10 which form the base of the cradle 11. The said bars 10 are connected ti'igether by the cross bars 12 which are slightly concaved along their upper edges.
The upper ends ol" the uprights 3 are connected together by the beam 1.3 and one end ol' the track 141s pivoted to said beam 13. Said track is provided at suitable intervals with the supports 15 which are collapsible and consist of the side pieces 16 pivotally joined together near their upper ends as at 1.7 and having at their upper ends sockets to tor the reception of the said track l t. The lower brace 1?) is made up of sections hinged together as at 20 and pivotally connected as at 21 at their ends with the said side pieces 16.
The apparatus is used as 'tollows:'lhe tank I is .lilled with water and the cradle ll is lowered. into the same. llot rock or iron is then thrown into the water and rests upon the said cradle. \Yhen the water has become heated the cradle 11 is elevated by turning the windlass (5 and the rock and iron is Iitted out of the tank. The material is then removed from the cradle. The hog is then run along the track 14, the animal previously having been butchered. and is placed upon the cradle 11. The said cradle is then lowered into the tank. The animal is thoroughly scaldcd al'ter which the cradle is elevated as above described. A gambrel stick is applied to the hind leg ot the animal and it is run oll' on the track It l'or dressing.
It will be observed that the uprights 3 may be readily separated from the tank .I and that the beam 13 may be disconnected from said uprights. Thus the parts may be knocked down when not in use and stored away. As the track support is made up of sections and members pivotally connected together it may also be collapsed. and will occupy but small space.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is 1 1. An apparatus of the character indicated comprising a tank, pockets attached to said tank, uprights titting in said. pockets guides mounted upon the uprights, a windlass attached to one ot the uprights, a beam connecting the upper ends ol the uprights together, a cradle mounted for movement along the guides, pulleys journaled above the cradle and ropes attached to the cradle and the windlass and passing over said pulleys.
2. An apparatus of the character indicated comprising a tank, pockets attached to said tank, uprights ['itting in said pockets, guides mounted upon the uprights, a windlass attached to one of the uprights, a beam connecting the upper ends of the uprights to- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as gether, a cradle mounted for movement along l my own, I have hereto affixed my signature the guides and having bars Which recelve the in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
