BUTCHERING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,367, dated November 20, 1 894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PINKNEY A. DAvIs, a citizen of the United States,residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Butchering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a butchering apparatus designed to facilitate the operation of suspending, scalding, cleaning and loading hogs and other animals by farmers and butchers, the objects in view being to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device capable of being folded for transportation and erected with facility; furthermore, to provide an arrangement of parts whereby the scalding trough or barrel is out of the way of the cleaning table; and furthermore, to provide a sup porting post which may be arranged to accommodate a number of hogs or other animals.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

1 designates parallel sills, the rear ends of which support a transversely-disposed platform 3, which is secured in place by means of the adjustable Z-shaped brackets 4. By reason of having the bracksts 4:, ajustable, the platform 3 may be removed and set up without taking the brackets off of the sills, and, in order to secure the adjustment referred to, the brackets are provided with slots 5, engaged by an adj Listing-screw 6,whereby, when it is desired to detach the platform, the brackets may be loosened and removed from engagement with the platform Without disconnecting them from the sills.

7 represents arotary standard, which is pro-' vided with an enlarged base 8, bearing upon the platform and a depending central spindle 9 fitted in a socket 10 in the platform and subjacent sill. The standard is provided at its upper end with vertical bifurcated ears 11, and the hoisting or grappling lever 12 is provided With lateral trunnions 13, mounted in said bifurcated ears. The shorter arm of thelever is provided with a grappling hook 14E.

At the opposite end of the platform is arranged a vertical revoluble support 15, provided, like the standard, with an enlarged base and a depending spindle 16, which is mounted in a socket 17, in the platform. This support is provided near its upper end with a series of twin registering eyes 18, in

which are mounted the depending spindles 20,.

at the inner bifurcated ends of the cranes 21.

The sills 1 extend in front of the platform and support the parallel elevated table-rests 22 which are secured to the sills by means of the side straps 23. These rests support the horizontal boards or planks 24E, forming the table top, the terminal planks 24 having their outer sides or edges notched, as shown at 25, to engage the vertical portions of the an gle-irons 26, which are secured to the upper sides of the rests to prevent longitudinal displacement. The intermediate planks forming the table top have their extremities rounded or concaved, as shown at 27, to engage the scalding-barrel 28, which is thus disposed and held at the end of the table in convenient position for the transfer of the hog therefrom to the table.

The horizontal boards or planks 24, form the cleaning table for the apparatus, and it is to be noted at this point that the said sec tional cleaning table and the manner of setting up the same complete with the detachable platform 3, and the adjustable brackets 4, therefor, the knockdown features of the apparatus, it being obvious that the manner of assembling and setting up the table admits of the same being easily taken apart when the apparatus is to be moved.

This being the construction of my improved apparatus the operation thereof,brieflystated, is as follows: After the hogs have been killed they are engaged by the grappling lever and conveyed to the scalding-barrel, into which they are dipped in the usual manner, and after the completion of this step the hogs are placed upon the cleaning table, also by the said lever. After the gambrel stick has been arranged, the hog is again carried by means of the leverand suspended upon one of the cranes carried by the supporting post. After the cranes have been filled, the hogs may be again transferred to the cleaning table for cutting or to a wagon or other conveyance.

It will be observed that by the arrangement of the scalding-barrel at one end of the table the hog can be manipulated with greater ease and may be transferredfrom one part of the apparatus to another without carrying it beyond the reach of a single grappling lever, as illustrated; and furthermore, the front of the table is unobstructed and permits the free movement of the operator.

From theabove description it will be understood that the spindles of the standard and supporting post are merely stepped in the sockets of the platform, and this, in connection with the described construction of the other parts of the device, enables the latter to be dismembered and packed into a conveyance for transportation. This is an important point of advantage in machines or apparatus of this character, and emphasis is therefore laid upon the fact that the specific construction and manner of assembling the several parts of the apparatus not only provide the most convenient and desirable arrangement of the several parts to insure the convenient handling of the hogs, but at the same time each and every part of the apparatus is readily detachable whereby the entire apparatus may be readily assembled and quite as readily taken apart for the purpose of transportation, thereby imparting to the apparatus a portable character that is very desirable, inasmuch as most machines or apparatus for handling hogs are very cumbersome and heavy, and the transportation or moving thereof is troublesome and difficult.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described my invention, What I claim is- In a knockdown portable hog handling apparatus, the combination of opposite parallel sills, separate pairs'of Z-shaped brackets adjustably fitted on said sills, a supporting platform adapted to be detachably clamped on the sills by means of said brackets, table rests secured on the sills at one side of the pairs of brackets, oppositely located angle irons permanently secured on said table rests, and a sectional cleaning table adapted to 'be removably supported on said table rests and comprising a series of parallel planks closely abutted together, the outer of said planks being provided in their outer edges With notches to receive the vertical portions of said angle irons to obviate displacement and to hold the several planks together, substantially as set forth.
