UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE'STEPHENS, JR., 015* DANVERS, ILLINOIS.
HOG-SUSPENDING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STEPHENS,JI., a citizen of the United States, residing at Danvers, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements v in Hog-Suspending Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for the use of farmers, small butchers, etc., in slaughtering and suspending hogs, the object of. the invention being to provide a simple, convenient and inexpensive device of this character upon which the hogs may be slaughtered and thereafter readily and conveniently suspended.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and conveniently transported from place to place.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, in which:
Figure 1' is a perspective view of a suspending device embodying my invention, showing the front platform lowered for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the front platform elevated for the convenient transportation of the machine. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the device. Fig. 4: is a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an elevated main platform supported upon front and rear cross bars 2 and 3 secured to four corner posts 4:, which posts extend below said platform and are secured to sills or runners 5, on which the device may be drawn from place to place. The front ends of the sills carry clevises 6, to which a suitable draft device may be secured for the attachment of draft animals. The corner posts 4 extend upwardly in convergent relation to a suitable elevation above the platform 1 and are connected at their upper ends by longitudinal bars 7 and cross bars 8, forming a rectangular head frame, the parts being bolted or otherwise securely fastened together. The rear ends of the bars 7 and the opposite ends of the bars 8 respectively project beyond the rear end and sides of the frame to form a series of suspending arms 9, reinforced from the posts by braces 10. outwardly projecting suspending arms are thus provided around the head frame, the front ends of the bars 7 terminating flush with the front face of the front cross bar 8.
Hinged or pivoted to the front of the platforml is a front platform 11 adapted to be swung downward to a position in horizontal alinement with said platform 1 and to be supported in such position by pivoted folding legs 12. On this platform 11 the hogs are slaughtered. \Vhen the device is not in use for slaughtering purposes or is in storage or" process of transportation, the
platform 11 is swung or folded upward against the head frame and may be secured by any suitable fastening, such as a hook 13 on the head frame adapted to engage an eye 14 on said platform. When the front platform is thus folded the machine may be conveniently transported or stored in close comass. P A derrick, comprising a mast 15 provided with a horizontal arm 16 reinforced from the mastby a brace 17, is provided for lifting and swinging the hogs around the ap pliance so that they may be suspended from the arms 9. The mast is journaled in a bearing on the platform 1 and a bearing carried by longitudinal pieces 18 and a cross piece 19 fastened to the head frame and carries at its lower end a Windlass 20 of any ordinary construction. To this windlass is connected one end of a chain or cable which passes upwardly alongside the mast, thence over a pulley 21 at the top of the mast and thence forwardly over the arm 16 and has its free end suspended from a pulley at the free end of the arm 16 and provided with a hook 23 for the attachment of a sling 24 which is adapted for connection with a gambrel applied to the body of the hog to be suspended. After each hog is slaughtered, a gambrel is applied thereto, the sling connected therewith and the Windlass operated to elevate the hog, after which the crane is turned to bring the hog into proximity to the desired suspending arm 9, the gambrel being detached from the sling and slid onto the arm 9 while the hog hangs suspended. In this manner the hogs may be conveniently suspended around and from the head frame with a minimum amount of time and labor on the part of the operator.
The advantages of the device will be read ily understood from the foregoing description and its convenience to farmers and small butchers appreciated.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: v a
A hog suspending device comprising a frame including upwardly converging corner posts or uprights, a platform arranged between and carried by said uprights, said platform being provided with a bearing, longitudinal and transverse bars mounted upon the uprights above the platform and extended to form a series of projecting arms at the sides and rear of the device, a bearing Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
