T0 aZZ w ham it may concern Be it known that T, DANIEL Bevan, a subject of the King of (irreat Britain and Ireland, residing at Salt Rock Farm, Pembrey, in the county of Carmarthen, Wales, have invented new and useful Improvements Relating to Portable Farm Cranes (for which 1 filed an application for patent in Great Britain May 10th, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a portable crane for use more particularly on farms and like establishments, where loose materials such as hay, timber or manure have constantly to be loaded, unloaded or dumped in large quantities and at different places. In such circumstances it is exceedingly convenient to have some portable apparatus by which this can be effected without power other than horse power or in some cases, manual power.
According to the invention my portable crane comprises a balanced jib which is adjustable in length and inclination to the horizontal and which is rotatably mounted on a vertical stand carried by awheeled platform. The jib has pulleys at its upper and lower ends over which the lifting hawser, which is intended to be operated by a horse, passes. Various lifting and grabbing devices may be attached to the hawser.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention Fig. 1 is side elevation and Fig. 2 a corresponding plan of the portable crane.
Referring to F3 gs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the jib is constructed in two parts 1 and 2, the upper part 1 sliding in guides in the lower part 2 and being capable' of adjustment in relation thereto by means of toothed pinions 3 carried in brackets on the part 2 and engaging racks L on the part 1. The pin ons 3 are operated by means of a handle 5 and a pawl (not shown) may be provided in a well-known manner to prevent the part 1 from running back when in a raised position. The part 1 may be strengthened by stays or chains 6 connected at one end to the part 1 and at the other to a standard 7.
The lower part 2 of the jib is pivotally mounted at 8 on a vertical standard 9 which can rotate in a bearing 10 at its base and is stayed in position by suitable struts 11 conneeted at their upper ends to a collar 12. The lower ends of the struts are attached to the framework of a stout wheeled support 13 on which is also mounted the bearing 10.

through a hole in the vertical standard 9 a peg 17 can be passed to hold the jib in posi tion. It will thus be seen that the jib can, be adjusted as regards length, is capable of rotation around a vertical axis and can also be adjusted as regards its inclination.
The jib isprovided at its upper and lower ends with pulleys 18 over or under which the lifting hawser 19 passes and fairleads may be provided at suitable points for guiding the hawser in its movement. At the lower end of the part 2 of the jib a braking device 20 may be mounted consisting of a block screwed down on to the hawser by a handwheel or in any other suitable manner. A balancing box 21 is also provided at Y the lower end of the jib to be filled with sand or other material as required by the adjustment of the upper part 1. The front part of the wheeled framework 13 is mounted on a bogie which is provided with a drawbar 22 in the usual manner. I
The crane is intended to be operated by a horse attached to the hawser 19 at the right-hand side of Fig. 1 and in. order to provide a resistance to the whole structure moving when the hawser is pulled, I provide sprags 23 pivoted at each side of the framework 13 and operated by a lever 24,-. These sprags have forkedor spiked surfaces 25 at their lower ends and are intended to be forced into the ground before hauling on the hawser 19 so as to ofier'vresistance to the movement of the structure 13.
I claim 1. A portable farm crane comprising, a wheeled platform, a vertical standard carried thereby and rotatable in a horizontal plane, a lower j'b member pivoted to said standard and adapted to rotate therewith and to swing in a vertical plane, an upper jib member slidably mounted in said first member, means for sliding said upper jib member, links rigidly connecting the lower jib member with the aforesa d standard, upper and lower guide pulleys carried by said jib members, and a liftinghawser passing over the upper and under the lower pulley, whereby thepulling strain on the jib will be transmitted direct to the standard and any resulting movement of the jib prevented.
2. A portable farm crane comprising, a
wheeled platform, a vertical standard carried thereby and rotatable in a horizontal plane,
a jib pivoted to said standard and adapted to rotate therewith and to swing in a vertical plane, connections between said jib and said standard whereby vertical movement of said jib relatively to said standard, may be prevented, upper and lower guide pulleys carried by said jib, and a lifting hawser passing over the upper pulley and under the 10 lower, whereby the pulling strain on thejib will be transmitted direct to the standard and any resulting movement of the jib prevented.
