- This invention relates to hoisting apparatus, particularly to the portable type thereof and has for its object the provision of a novel wheel supported derrick structure which is well designed for use at manufacturing plants, factories, warehouses and other places where it is necessary to do considerable hoisting, the device being so constructed that it may be wheeled from place to place either in its inactive position or while carrying a load, the arrangement being such that the load may be lifted and also swung from one side to the other to facilitate deposit thereof at a desired loca tion.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PAULINO Mos'rAzA, a citizen of Spain, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have-invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Derricks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoisting apparatus, particularly to the portable type thereof and has for its object the provision of a novel wheel supported derrick structure which is well designed for use at manufacturing plants, factories, warehouses and other places where it is necessary to do considerable hoisting, the device being so constructed that it may be wheeled from place to place either in its inactive position or while carrying a load, the arrangement being such that the load may be lifted and also swung from one side to the other to facilitate deposit thereof at a desired loca tion.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is provided with a windlass mechanism for effecting hoisting of the load itself, and another windlass mechanism for effecting tilting of a movable portion of the device whereby the load may be subsequently elevated to a de sired point or lowered as'the case may be.
Yet another object is the provision of a device of'this character in which the windlass mechanism is equipped with locking means for holding it against movement so that the parts will remain set in any adjusted or desired position while the device is being wheeled about from place to place in the carrying of a load} i An additional object is the provision of a derrick which will be simple and ineXpen sive to manufacture, easy to operate and control, positive in action, efficient and durable in service and ageneral improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which: i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device,
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 8-3 of Figure 2 Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown the device as comprising a truck 10 equipped with suitable wheels 11 which. have fiat treads so as to roll upon any ordinary surface, or which might,if preferred be flanged whereby to travel on a track though this detail is not illustrated as it is obvious. The truck includes a platform 12 from the central portion of which rises a projection 13 formed with a race containing bearing balls 14. The numeral 15 designates an upright or standard which has its lower end secured to a disk 16 having a race engaging upon the balls 14. The standard 15 is shown as bifurcatedand secured within the lower end thereof is a post 17 which is journaled through the platform 12 and which has secured upon its lower end a disk 18 formed with a race holding balls 19 which are likewise engaged within a race on the underside of the platform. By this construction it will be seen that the standard 15 is freely rotatable with respect to the truck.
I have shown the truck as equipped with a handle 20 pivotally mounted at 21 and therefore capable of vertical swinging to suit the requirements of the individual user and also to be capable of being swung down onto the ground or other surface out of'the way of an operator manipulating the device. While it is not necessary it may be advisable to provide a rod 22 pivoted on the truck and engaging through a bracket 23 on the handle for holding the handle rigidly in a desired position.
1 Located within the standard 15 and pivoted at '24 is a substantially triangular frame including an elongated bar 25 a cross bar 26, and diagonal brace bars 27 which are connected by plates 28 which are also secured to the bar 26 and through which the pivot 24 passes. At one end the bar 25 is formed with a handle 29 shaped for con venient engagement by the hands of an opera tor, while the other end is form-ed with a bifurcated head 30 on which is pivoted at 31 a tiltably mounted plate 32 having an upstanding lip 33 I have also shown a link 34 depending from an eyebolt 35 on the bar 25 and terminating in a ring or loop 36 which might be engaged upon a hook 37 on the upright or standard for holding this triangular frame in its uppermost position. At the top of the standard or upright 15,
is a cross bar 38 from which depend bearings 39 within which are received and supported the reduced hubs 4.0 of wheels ll equipped with crank handles and .l-Il. These wheels are carried by and rotatable upon a shaft l3 on the intermediate portion of which is mounted a grooved pulley 44 located within the biturcationot the upright. The wheel 41 and hubs form portions of drums 4-5 and 46 which carry toothed disks 4-? andtS respectively. Se cured to and wrapped about the drum l5 is a cable 49 which is trained under a grooved pulley 50 journaled between arms 51 carried by the upright. After engaging about this pulley, the cable is led upwardly and secured at 52 upon the handle end of the bar 25.
Secured to and wrapped about the drum 46 is a cable 53 which passes down and which is trained under a pulley it mounted adajacent the pulley 50. After leaving the pulley 5 the cable is brought upwardly andover the pulley 55 journal'ed within th head '30.
The hoisting device proper comprises a tongs including arms 56 pivoted in crossed relation as shown at 57 and having any suitable co-acting jaws 58. Slidablc upon the upper diverging'aims 59 of the tongs is a cross member 60 carrying an eyebolt '61 to which is connected :1. link 62 carried by the free end of the cable-53. The link 62 is connected with the upper ends of the arms 59 by flexible members 63 for limiting opening movement of the tongs.
In the use of the device it will be seen that it may be readily wheeled about from place to place where its employment is desired. By grasping the handle 29 the operator may swing the entire standard and derrick structure upon the truck. By rotating the drum l5, it is apparent that the cable 4 9 will oper atev to tilt the triangular frame rearwardly and thus lift the forward end thereof. By rotating the drum l6, the cable 53 may be wound thereon for lifting an object by means of the tongs.
It is preferable to provide means for locking the parts in a desired position, and to accomplish this I make use of vertically slidable pawls 6 1 which are mounted within the cross member 38 and which are adapted to engage between successive teeth on the notched disks 4'? and 4-8. After a load has been hoisted by means of the tongs, the drum 46 may be locked by means of the pawl 65., and after the triangular trams has been tilted by means of the drum 45, the disk 47 may be engaged by the pawl 64. to effect locking. Vhile it .is not necessary it is preferable that these pawls be carried by chains 66 orthe like which are in turn connected with an eye bolt 67 at the top of the upright so that the pawls cannot become lost when withdrawn from their sockets.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed, inexpensive and easily operated and controlled hoisting device which will be oil great advantage in many places as Facilitating the hoisting. or lowering. of objects too heavy to be handled manually. the device also serving as a carrier in view of its portability which enables it to be used for transporting objects from one place to another.

Having thus "described my invention 1 claim:
A portable hoisting device comprising a truck. an upright jourrially mounted there on and having its central portion open a substantially V shaped frame pivoted at its angle within said uprighh bearings mounted at opposite sidesof the top of the upright, a shattextending through the upright and said bearings. winding drums on said shaft at opposite sides of the upright, handles for turning the drums. a "pulley on said shaft within the upright, a ln-acketmounted on the lower portion of the upright. a pair of pulleys journaled in said bracket, a cable secured to and wrapped about one drum trained under one of said pair of pulleys and connected with the rear end of said frame For tilting the same. a guide pulley journaled in the Forward end of the frame, a cable secured to and wrapped about the other drum, trained under the other of said pair of pulleys and over the pulley within the upright and over said last named pulley, and a grap iile carried by the free end of the last named cable.
