To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK L. SCHUI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elcho, in the county of Langlade, State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Log Decker or Hoisting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved machine .for hoisting and loading, piling or decking various objects or commodities and the like, preferably logs, timber, and stumps, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, eilicient and practical apparatus, and one which is very inexpensive to construct and easily and quickly operated.
r-i further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind in which the cross and intersecting beams of the superimposed structure (which is mounted upon runners) are disposed or spaced high enough from the runner, as to permit stumps to pass between the runner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporting and lifting boom, so disposed that when the pulley blocks of the hoisting and pulling cable contact, a further pull on the hoisting and pulling cable will lift or further tilt the boom, whereby a log or the like may be hoisted higher than ordinarily necessary, so that the log may be decked on a pile. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus of this kind, in which the hoisting cable may be pulled in any direction by a team of horses or other draft animals.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metallic casting,'to hold the ends of the upwardly converging beams of the frame securely together, and also to act as a guide for the supporting guy rope or cable of the supporting and lifting boom.
In practical fields, the details of construetion may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate runners, to corresponding ends of which a suitable draft chain 3 is connected by means of the eyes 4c. The chains 3 are connected to a ring 5, to which a single chain 6, having an end ring 7, is connected, whereby suitable draft animals may be connected for moving the apparatus from one place to another. Fixed to the runners 1 and 2 by means of the metallic straps or plates 8, are the beams 9 and 10. The beams 9 converge upwardly toward each other, and in an end view of the apparatus, or a view is a detail perspective view of the such as Fig. 2, said beams are disposed vertically upright. The beams 10 incline toward each other and also toward the upper extremities of the beams 9. In fact, said beams 9 and 10 come together at a common junction, and fitting over the apex of these beams a metallic casting or holder 11.) and by means of the bolts 12, thiscasting is secured to the joined ends of the beams 9 and 10. The casting is provided with extension plates 13, andeutending through the extension plates and through the beams 9 is an eye bolt 14;. on which a suitable pulley 15 is suspended. The arms of a staple 16 eX- tend through the casting and through the upper ends of said beams 9 and 10, and have nuts 17 on their extremities. The guy cable 18 is connected to the staple 16 and has its other end connected to a stake 19, thereby bracing and reinforcing the apparatus. In tersecting or crossing bars 20 are secured to and designed to brace the beams 9 and 10. Cross bars 21 are also secured to and brace the beams 9'and 10. The casting is provided with an integral circular eye or ring 22, and extending from the edges of the sides of the ring or eye 22, are the flanges 23, which. merge integrally and downwardly into one of the sides of the casting. The inner surfaces of the flanges '23 merge together, as shown at 24:, to provide an unobstructed guide for a guy cable Plates 26 are secured to the beams 9 at their lower portions, and the lower ends of the plates are provided with rolls 27, to receive the bolts 28, which have nuts 29, and pivotally mounted upon the bolts 28 are plates 30, there being one pair for each bolt. Secured between the plates of each pair is a beam 31. These beams 31 converge toward each other and have their outer ends secured together, as at 32. Extending transversely of the outer ends of the beams 31, is a rod 33. A chain 34, constructed in the form of a loop, is arranged over the upper ends of the beams 31 (which, by their arrangement, constitute a lifting and hoisting boom) so as to engage the transverse rod 33. The guy cable 25 is conected at 35, to the chain 34. The adja cent ends of the chain 3 1 are connected by a ring 36, from which, a pulley 37 is suspended. The lower or other end of the guy cable 25 is connected to an eye 38 of the runner 2. Secured to an eye 39 of the pulley 37 is a hoisting or pulling cable e0, which passes over a pulley ll (which has a hook 42), then upwardly over the pulley 3T, thence over the pulley 15, and then over the pulley 43 (which is connected to an eye 1% of the runner 1) and finally outwardly in any suitable direction, so that suitable draft animals or a team of horses may be connected thereto for imparting a pulling action upon the cable 40.,
In using this improved log hoisting or decking apparatus, the same is first arranged and suitably anchored in the desired posi tion. A log to be hoisted or decked or loaded upon a sleigh or sled, or upon a wagon or a pile, first has a suitable chain or cable passed about it. The hoisting and pulling cable is then let out, permitting the hook 42 to engage about the chain or cable of the log or the like to be hoisted, after which a pulling action is imparted on the cable 10. When the pulley 11 contacts with the pulley 37,
the boom may be tilted further upwardly, to facilitate the decking of the logs. Also, when the pulley 41 contacts with the pulley 37, for the purpose of further tilting the boom, the guy cable 25 may be readjusted.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is:
Ina log decker and hoisting apparatus, a pair of runners. a superimposed quadrangular pyramidal skeleton frame having one face perpendicular, said frame comprising four upwardly converging beams, intersecting bracing means connecting the four beams, and disposed considerably above the runners, to permit stumps to pass between the runners, transverse bracing beams for the first beams. a foursided tapering. hollow casting receiving and holding the conjoining ends of the first beams, saidv casting having a guide eye and a guide channel. a boom hingedly united to the perpendicular side of said frame, a guy cable passing through the eye and the guy channel and connecting the upper end of the boom and one of the runners for holding the boom in difierent tilted positions. and a hoisting cable carried by the boom and passing over pulleys of said frame, and to which a pulling action may be imparted.
