U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. DICKINSON, OF OBLAND, INDIANA.
BUT-CHERING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,083, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed November 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. DICKINSON, of Orland, in the county of Steubeuand State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butchering Appliances or Apparatus, of which the following is aspecitication. I
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient apparatus for suspending, scalding, handling, and loading hogs and other animals by farmers or butchera.
The accompanying drawing illustrates in perspective my improved appliances or apparatus.
A indicates a suitable base or frame, near the center of which is secured a standard, B, provided with a ledge or notch, O, and with a swivel cap, D, in which is pivoted the liftinglever E. This lever E is provided with a suitable swivel and grappling-hook, F, adapted to readily take hold of a hog-hook or a gambrel, to suspend an animal. The lever is also provided with a brace, G, pivoted to it and adapt ed to engage in thenotch O, to hold the lever in an elevated position. Posts H are secured in the frame, and provided at their tops with swivel-caps I, having cross-arms K, four, six, or eight,or any other convenient number, at the top for suspending dead animals. The standard B is provided with a recess, L, for supporting one side of a table, M, the other side of which may be supported by legs N, or in any ordinary way. At one side of this table, within a suitable circular recess in its edge, I secure a scalding-barrel, O, by means of a chain or cable, P. There may be two or more posts with swivel-caps and cross-arms, as convenient; buttwo or three will usually be sufficient.
From this explanation of the construction of my apparatus it will be seen that by means of the lifting-lever animals which have been butchered may readily be lifted up and swung around, to be eitherlaid upon the table or scald; edin the barrel or suspended upon the revolvin g'cross-arms. The lifting-lever is capable of adjustment, so as to lengthen or shorten its respective arms, by means. of the pin-holes Q. By means of this lever the animal can be lifted up and down while in the barrel undergoing the scalding operation, and then can be lifted out and suspended from the opposite end and afterward scalded very thoroughly, and all these scalding, suspending, and changing operations maybe accomplished easily by a single person, and a large number of animals may be thus disposed of and finally suspended, and when ready for loading a Wagon can be driven up alongside and the lever will serve to chatble one man to rapidly and easily load the animals, whether heavy or light. There need not necessarily be a special base or frame, as the standard andposts may all be setiu the ground, or under a shed, whenever that is desirable.
It will be observed that the parts are separable, so th atthe appar atus can be taken down and readily paekcdaway or transported. When a frame or base is provided the standard and posts are of course to be mortised into it in such a way that they can be readily taken out for packing away or to be transported; and the base itselt'should be framed, so that it can readily betaken to pieces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the central standard provided with the swivel-cap and notch U, the lifting-lever and its brace, the recess L, and the table supported therein, the scalding-barrel connected with the table, and posts provided with the pivoted caps and cross-arms, constituting an improved portable butchering appa ratus, substantially as and for the purpose-described.
Injtestimonywhereot I have hereunto'subscribed my name.
GEORGE F. DICKINSON.
