Description
J. E. IRVINE. CLOTHES HANGER.
No. 590,311. 4 Patented Sept. 21,1897.
Wz'm-wwy Inventor a azk UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. IRVINE, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
CLOTHES-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,311, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed February 8,1896. Serial No. 578,560. (Model) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. IRVINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Clothes- Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manner of hanging clothes for drying purposes from a single rope or wire line-wire preferred as being less liable to shrinkage or breakage-by the use of separate wire hangers, which can beconnected to each other after one is attached to line. This clothes-hanger is constructed so as to reduce to a minimum the possibility of the clothes coming in contact with the fixed line.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one entire hanger in miniature on clothes-line and fitted on the same by suspending spiral eyes, one at each end. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the ends of two hangers connected on the line. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a hanger, showing connecting spiral eye and also one of the suspending spiral eyes as fitted to the line.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Straight wire a, above the fixed line 6, connects suspending spiral eyes I) 6. Wire 0, to which the clothes are pinned, is below and clear of fixed line e,on which the hanger slides, suspended therefrom by suspending spiral eyes I) b. Spiral-eye connection (I on the front end of each hanger is to connect the hangers to each other, as in Fig. 2.
This hanger is made from a single piece of wire formed to have straight wire a connecting two suspending spiral eyes I) b, by which the hanger is suspended from a rope or wire line drawn taut between two points of support. The eyes 7) b are located at the ends of the straight wire at right angles thereto and slightly below said wire, the ends of the wire bent down, and one of the ends is bent parallel with the upper straight wire to form the lower member of the clothes-hanger. At the terminals of the wire are formed eyes f to connect the ends of the wire. One of the ends of the wire is extended and is formed into the connecting spiral eye d.
Upon the lower wire the clothes are suspended for drying purposes and are fastened thereto with clothespins. Each hanger or section being exactly similar in form and construction, they are interchangeable, making no difference as to which is attached to line first or last. The upper straight wire a, above the fixed line 6,
connecting suspending spiral eyes I) b, not
only tends to prevent the clothes from coming in contact with fixed line 6, but stifiens and strengthens the whole structure.
To attach a hanger to the fixed line, place the suspending spiral eyes upon and to the right of the fixed line with the depending members of the hanger at the left side of the fixed line, when by springing fixed line backward and upward over straight wire a the hanger is secured in position, the second section to be secured in the same manner as the first, after allowing the rear end of the first section to drop over back of spiral-eye connection. A slight pull causes said rear end to drop in spiral-eye connection, the hanger to be detached by holding the front end of near hanger, and reaching over straight wire a grasp the line 6, springing it upward and backward over straight wire a, which will free the hanger from the line. A slight turn of this hanger to the right and a slightpush forward releases the connecting spiral eye frornthe adjacent hanger, and as many hangers as are needed can be easily and quickly attached or detached.
These hangers can be made strong and in convenient lengths of from two to three feet each by five to six inches in depth.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y A clothes-hanger consisting of an upper straight wire provided with an open suspending spiral eye at each end, slightly below and at right angles to the straight wire, the ends of the wire being extended downward and bent to form a link-shaped section, one terminal of the wire forming the connecting spiral eye, and connected to the other terminal, substantially as set forth.
JOHN E. IRVINE.
