BOOK=HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,973, dated September 14, 1897.
Application filed June 12, 1897. Serial No. 640,461. (No model.) i i To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLAcE O. MILLER, of Bruce, in the county of Brookings and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in book-holders or leaf-spread ers; and it consists in the novel arrangement of simple parts, as will be hereinafter fully described.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple, cheap, and durable device that can be readily attached to a piano or organ and which when so attached can be readily manipulated to keep the leaves of a book or music-sheets spread apart in a convenient position to be seen. i
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent in the course of the followingdescription, and the points ofnovelty will be particularly set forth in the claims.
I am enabled to accomplish the object of my invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved book-holder and leaf-spreader, showing the same in position for use. Fig. 2 represents a similar view showing the device in inoperative position, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of my improved device.
Referring to thedrawings, the numeral 1 indicates the plate which is formed, preferably, of thin metal turnedover at its upper portion to form ears 2 and recesses 3. The said plate is provided with coun-terbored perforations 4 for the reception of screws, by which means it is firmly secured to the organ,
'piano, or other support upon which it is to be attached.
The numeral 5 indicates a plate provided at its upper ends with ears 6, which have pivoted between their forward ends an arm 7, which is formed, preferably, of a single piece of wire bent to form two lateral extensions 8, which extend to the cars on each side of the plate, where they are bent downward and e11- ter the perforations 9 in said cars. This pivoted arm 7 is provided with two laterally-extending and vertically-adjustable arms 10, which are preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent to form a loop 11 at the center of said arm. These laterallyextending arms 10 when the device is in operative position serve to keep the leaves of the book or the music-sheets spread apart in convenient po sition to be seen.
Secured in the lower ends of the cars 6 is a spring-arm 12, which is also preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent to form two rearwardly-extending arms 13, which are adapted to rest upon the plate. The forward portion. of the arm 12 bears upon the laterallyextending arms 8 of the arm 7 and serves to keep the arm 7 pressed normally forward against the leaves of the book or music-sheets.
The arm 12 has its forward end bent under the arm 7, forming a rest for said arm 7 and preventing it from being rocked too far for; ward.
When it is desired to remove the book or sheet from beneath the arm 7 or toturn a page, the said arm is rocked backward on its pivots until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, with the shoulders of the laterallyextending arms 8 of the arm 12 in contact with the floor of the plate.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the exact position shown, and many modifications involving mechanical skill may be made in my invention without changing thereof.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A book-holder or leaf-spreader comprising a plate having upturned side edges extending throughout a portion of its length, an arm pivoted between said edges and extending beyond the plate, a Vertically-ad justable arm 011 said pivoted arm, a springarm secured between said edges and bearing on said pivoted arm to keep it pressed against the leaves of the book or music-sheets, substantially as described.
2. A book-holder or leaf-spreader, comprisin g a plate having upturned forward edges, a pivoted arm provided with laterally-extendits character or departing from the spirit ing arms pivotaily secured in said edges, a In testimony whereof I have signed this spring-arm bearing upon the laterally-extend specification in the presence of two subscribing arms of the pivoted arm and under said ing' Witnesses.
arm to limitits forward movement, and means VALLAOE O. MILLER. 5 for securing the holder to the piano, organ, Witnesses:
or other support, substantially as and for the SOL. XVALTERS,
purpose set forth. OLE HALTER.
