wmmsss ATTORNEYS UNITED S'rr-i'rns l lDlVARD A. GRAY, OF COLLINXVOOD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO ADELBERT N. RUSSEL AND RALPH O. SHEPARD, OF SAME PLACE.
LEG-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,562, dated September 7', 1897.
Application filed September 25, 1896. Serial No. 607,000. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD A. GRAY, of Collinwood, Ouyahoga county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg-Shields for Firemen; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a leg-shield for a locomotive-fireman, the object being to shield the firemans left leg in firing and protect his trousers or overalls.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the trousers upon the left leg of a fireman and provided with my improved shield that comprises, preferably, an apron B, provided with means for holding the same to the leg and with other means forsuspending it from the firemans body. Apron B is made large enough to cover the greater portion of the forward and left -hand sides of the leg.
Apron B forms the rear face of the shield,
and is made, preferably, canvas or duck.
To the forward or outer side of the central of a single piece of portion of apron B is suitably attached a sheet 0 of asbestos cloth capable of resisting fire or heat, and said heat-resisting sheet is large enough to shield the knee and adjacent portions of theleg of the fireman. Sheet 7 is preferably stitched or sewed to apron B. Said apron, at the upwardlyand downwardly extending side edges of sheet 0, is folded forwardly, as at 13, and somewhat overlaps the forward or outer side of said sheet G, that is sewed or stitched, as at O, to said overlapping portions 15 and main or rear portions of the apron. The upper end and lower end of apron B are folded forwardly, as at B somewhat over the forward or outer side of the upper end and lower end, respectively, of the heat-resisting sheet G, and said ends of sheet C are stitched or sewed, as at C to the overlapping portions 13 and rear or main portions of the apron.
The means employed for holding the shield in position against the iiremans leg consists, preferably, of two bands or straps G and H, arranged to extend around the rear side of the leg and suitably attached to apron B at the different side edges, respectively, of the apron. Band G is attached to the lower end of the apron and band H is attached at or near the central portion of the apron. Apron B is provided with a belt K, designed to encircle the body of the fireman, and the apron at its upper end is provided with any suitable number of straps M, arranged to engage buckles K, secured to the belt and instrue mental in suspending the shield from the belt.
The means employed for suspending the shield from the firemans body accommodates a vertical adj ustm ent of the shield, and there by renders the shield readily applicable to legs having different lengths, respectively.
My improved shield, it will be observed, is very durable, and not only protects the trousers of the fireman, but affords him great relief in shielding his left leg from the fire.
That I claim is- A leg-shield for a locomotive fireman, consisting of the flexible apron forming the rear face of the shield, said apron being folded upon itself at the side and end edges thereof 3 the asbestos or fireproof sheet constituting the front and major portion of the face of the shield and stitched or sewed to the said folded or overlapping portions and to the main or rear portion of the apron; the bands or straps secured to the vertical edges of the apron and passing around the rear portion of the leg, and the belt and straps for snspend- 9 ing and accommodating the vertical adjust ment of the shield from the firemans body, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of September, 189G.
EDXVARD A. GRAY.
