SICKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,843, dated August 24, 1897.

To all whom it wtcoy concern:

Be it. known that I, JAMES O. H. VAUGHT, of Belgrade, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in Sickles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is an improved means for .fixing siokles to the sickle-bars, on which they Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

v The sickle has preferably the usual form and has its body or inner portion provided with a rectangular elongated opening a, run transversely to the sickle and longitudinally with reference to the sickle-bars, (the latter part being not shown in the drawings.)

The sickle is held to the sickle-bar by means of an elongated plate having itsside portions bent down and thence in to form parallel tongues 12. The middle unbent portion of said plate has its ends separated from the other portion to form flaps c, the distance between which is equal to a little less than the distance between the ends of the opening a in the sickle.

In connecting the parts the flaps c are bent 3 5 up perpendicular and passed through the opening a, so that the tongues 19 will run transversely to the sickle. The flaps 0 should now be bent down to the position shown in the drawings, whereupon the plate will be held rigidly in place. Two parts-the sickle and plate-thus form a rigid structure which may readily be applied or removed from the sicklebar. This operation is efiected by sliding the sickles over the bar so that the inbent portions of the tongues b may run in grooves in the sickle-bar, as will be understood from the prior state of the art.

Having thus described my invention, I clam as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a cutting apparatus, the combination of a sickleebar, a knife having an opening formed through it, and a plate having oppositely-arranged parallel tongues, the end por- 5 5 tions of the plate being arranged to pass through the opening in the knife to hold the plate in place and the tongues being arranged to engage the sickle-bar to hold the knife in position and to be longitudinally movable 6o thereon, substantially as described.
