CUTTING MECHANISM FQR MOWERS, REAPERS, AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. LIVEN- soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castana, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Mechanism for Mowers, Reapers, and the like, of which the following. is a specification.
It is well known in the operation of agricultural machinery embodying cutting mechanism, that the latter becomes clogged and requires frequent cleaning. Means have been devised to facilitate the removal of the cutter bar so that access may be had to the finger bar for removing obstructing matter and also to enable the knife sections to be sharpened when required. Such means have departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing hereto attached, Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of a cutting mechanism embodying the invention. Figs. 2, 3 and 4: are sectional views on the respective lines 2, 3 and 4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5' is a sectional view similar to Fig.2,
parts broken away and showing the elements on a larger scale and the retainer thrown upward into open position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The finger bar is of ordinary construction and is provided at its inner end with the usual shoe 2. The guard fingers 3 of ordinary formation are secured to the finger bar 1 in the accustomed way. The cutter bar 4 q is slidably mounted on the guard fingers 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

and is provided with the knife section 5. These several parts may be of any well known construction and arrangement and are illustrated to demonstrate the application of the invention.
The retainer consists of a bar 6 which extends the length of the finger bar and is mounted thereon to receive a limited lateral and pivotal movement. A plurality of openings 7 are formed in the bar 6 at intervals in its length and the portions of the bar in the rear of the openings 7 are made rounding, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 2 and 5. Clips 8 secured to the bar 6 have their forward ends engaging the rounded portions of the bar 6 in the rear of the openings 7. The engagement between the bar 6 and clips 8 is such as to admit of the bar 6 having a lateral movement and a pivotal movement, whereby said bar may be engaged with or disengaged from the finger bar and thrown upward, as indicated in Fig. 5, thereby admitting of the cutter bar being removed or placed in position. A plurality of studs 9 depend from the forward edge of the bar 6 and are adapted to enter notches or openings 10 formed in the finger bar. Each of the studs 9 is formed with a notch 11 to engage a portion of the finger bar and act jointly with the clips 8 to prevent vertical movement of the bar 6. The studs 9 are engaged with and disengaged from the finger bar by means of a lateral movement of the retainer bar 6. A forward movement of the retainer bar 6 disengages the studs 9 from the finger bar. A rearward movement of the retainer bar 6 en gages the studs 9 with the finger bar.
Lock means are provided for securing the retainer bar 6 in operative position. The locking means consist of flat springs 12 and studs 13 at the free ends of the springs 12, said studs being adapted to pass through openings a formed in the retainer bar 6 and enter registering openings formed in the finger bar. This is indicated most clearly in Fig. 4. Each of the springs 12 is pivotally connected at one end as indicated at 14 with the retainer bar 6, so that when the end of the spring provided with the stud 13 is drawn outward it may be moved laterally to engage the stud 13' with the bar 6 at one side of the opening and thereby hold the stud 13 clear of the opening, as indicated in Fig. 5, whereby the retainer bar6 maybe moved laterally and swung upwardly so as to clear the cutter bar and admit of the samebeing removed from the finger bar, either for sharpening or for clearing the parts of grass or other obstructing matter.
Projections 15 extend forwardly from the retainer bar 6 and overhang the cutter bar, thereby holding'it in position on the finger bar. The projections 15 may form a part of the bar 6 or maybe attached thereto in any manner." The studs 9 are located at the rear 'endsof the projections 15 so as to coeperate therewith and prevent possible movement thereof when the retainer is in operative position and made secure by the fastening "means; 1 v V 'When it is required to remove the cutter bar, the" free ends of the springs 12 are drawn upward'an'd swung laterally, thereby releasin the retainer bar 6 which is moved forwardly to disengage the studs 9 from the finger bar after which the bar 6 and attached parts are swung upwardly, as indicated in Fig. 5, thereby releasing the cutter bar, which is moved tobring the cutter sections opposite the spacesbetween the guard fingers when the'cutter is removed by'elevating the bar 1 to disengage it from the finger bar after'which saidjcutter bar is moved rearwardly, thereby clearing the knife sections from the guard fingers; The reverse of this operation'is practised when placing the cutter bar in position, the same being made secure' by swinging the retainer into horizontal position and moving the bar 6 rearwardly to engage the studs 9 with the finger bar,- said retainer being'made secure by swinglng the springs 12 to cause the studs 13 to aline with the registering openings in the retainer and finger bars.
