Description

SIGKLE FOR MOWERS.
APPLIoATIoN FILED AUG; 111111 1.
nNrrnn srnrns PATENT ernten WILLIAM C. HOSS, OF JACKSON, CALIFORNIA.
SIGKLE FOR IVIOWERS.
To all whom t may concern.' j
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. I-Ioss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Amador, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sickles for Mowers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in mowers for cutting hay, etc., the object of the invention being to produce a means for retaining the mowing teeth in the cutter bar in an adjustable manner and in such a way that independent teeth may be used and can be taken out and replaced in a rapid and effective manner should one become broken or rendered useless.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device, and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of suoli structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of t-he following speciication and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of the sickle. Fig. 2 is a similar view partly broken out in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on a line wof Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the cutter bar proper which is provided along its rear edge with a plurality of upwardly projecting lugs 2. At the inner end of the cutter bar 1 is a projecting lug 3 through which projects a threaded pin 4 carrying on its inner end a bar 5 having a plurality of upwardly projecting lugs 6, beveled on their inner edges as at 7 and provided with wedge shaped key members 8.
In practice the cutting teeth 9 are pro-. vided with recesses 10 which fit around the lugs 2 as shown, said teeth 9 being further Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with notches or recesses 11 to receive the keys 8 on the lugs 6. This position being then fixed by means of a nut 12 on the pin 4 bearing against the lug 3, which nut is used to draw up the pin 4 to pull the bar 5 along until the keys S lit into the notches 11 which then hold the teeth 9 in posit-ion around the projecting lugs 2, there then being a top plate 13 screwed to the lugs 2 which holds the teeth 9 incased. As will be understood, it is not necessary to remove this plate 13 to take out the teeth 9, the only thing necessary being to loosen the nut 12 to slide the bar 5 along until the keys 8 are disengaged from the notches 11 and this leaves the teeth 9 free to be removed. The bar 5 is held in alinement by means of a mortised end 14 which engages a lug 15 on the outer end of the bar 1.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the ob-jects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of t-he device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising a cutter bar, a plurality of upwardly projecting lugs on said'cutter bar spaced apart at equal distances, teeth members fitting into said bar and having recesses receiving said lugs, the top plane of said teeth members being flush with the top plane of said lugs, a sliding bar disposed atthe rear of said cutter bar and having means for locking said teeth in position in said cutter bar, an independent bar disposed over said teeth members and said lugs, screws projecting through said bar into said lugs, the top plane of said last named bar being flush with the top plane of said sliding bar as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM C. HOSS.
