Description
Patented July I, |902 a. T. MYERS., GUTTER BAR FOR MOWING MACHINES.
(Application filed Mar. 3, 1902.)
(No Model.)
Nita STATES,
JOHN T. MYERS, OF CULMERSVILLE,A PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 03,806, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed March S, 1902.
This invention relates tocertain new and i useful improvements in knife-barsfor mow: ers, and said knife-barbein'g secured in an ordinary cutter attached to mowers of the' well-known construction i The present invention has for its object to provide a series of removable blades in the knife-bar, means to securely lock said knives in position, and means to permit the knives to be easily removed for the purpose of sharpening or replacing one of the blades in case they are broken.
Another object of the present invention isl to provide a knife-bar of the above-described construction, strong, durable, comparativelyy inexpensive to manufacture,.and highly efficient in its use; furthermore, to provide a de vice that will positively lock the cutter-blades permanently and that the jar incident to de vices of this kind will not loosenA the blades,- as would otherwise be the case.. f
With the above and other 'objects in view the invention consists in the'novel construetion, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and: specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail refer-` ence is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this speciiicati'omand where? in like numerals of reference indicate like., J
parts throughout the several views,in which-'4' Figure 1 is a top plan View of my improved' knife-bar, showing the securing-plate partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view anda front View of thesame. Fig. 3 is an end View'. Fig. 4 is adetail View of the locking meansvand showing the parts disconnected,A p e A In the drawings the reference-numeral '1 represents the knife-bar, which carries an uping to the contracted or neck' portion 6.

-ward exten sion 2,4ha'vin g anin-wardly-extend ingbeveled face 3. ,'.lhis'k'nife-bar 1 carries a series of upwardly-extending lugs 4, these lugs having a beveled under face 5, extend- This knife-bar 1 also has formed' therein an opening 7 to receive a head S of tl'ie screw-threaded docking-bolt 9. n 10 are constructed so as tosnugly abut against The knives or cutter-blades one another when',` arranged in proper posi- Th'ese cutter-blades have formed at their abutting sides openings 11, which engage the lugs 4. A lockingbar 12 is secured :above the cutters, whichal'so has formed .therein a number of slots 14,.through which lthe lugs 4 extend. This locking-bar carries a beveled end 15 to engage .the beveled face gages the extreme end of the'screw-threaded bolt, securing the parts together. character that will be extremely simple in its V .lug 4, and then the opposite side Yoigthe knife may be easily placed over the lsquare end of fthe lug, thereby placing it in proper position.
When all the knife-blades'have been placed in position, the locking-bar is then placed over the lugs 4,and' the nut 17 tightened, thereby drawing' the knife-bar and looking- .plate in op posite directions and engaging the' locking-plate under the beveled side 5 of the 1 .l1'1g'4, thus securelylocking the knife-blades `in proper position and preventing the upward .displacement thereof andtllelugs serving to prevent the lateral displacement'of the same. In order to remove one or more of the.
iknives, the locking-bar isiifrstglemoved, and
then all or any of the cutter-blades may be removed for the purpose ot' sharpening or replacing the same. ,A l f f IOO Ybe made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a knife-bar having one of its ends provided on its upper face with an extension having a beveled underfaee, a series of vertically-arranged lugs carried by the said knife-bar, a series of removable eiltter-blades arranged on said cutter-bar, a locking-bar provided with a series of slots to reeeive the upper ends of the said lugs, and having one of its ends beveled and arranged under the said extension, and means whereby said knife-bar and locking-bar are locked together.
2. The combination with a knife-bar and a series of lugs arranged thereon, saidlugs having elongated upper ends provided with beveled under surfaces of a series of cutterblades arranged between the said lugs, a looking-bar provided with a series of openings to receive the upper ends of the said lugs, a locking-boltarranged between the said knifebar and looking-bar, said locking-bolt provided with an angular head seated in an opening in the knife-bar, and a nut on Vthe outer end of the said bolt.
3. The combination with a knife-bar havf under the said extension, a locking-bolt arranged between the said knife-bar and locking-bar and provided with an angular head seated in an opening in the knife-bar, a nut on the outer end of the said bolt, and means for preventing the rotation of the said nut, substantially as-deseribed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. MYERS.
