UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM T. VARDALL, OF NEAR MANLY JUNCTION, IOWA.
DOUBLE CUTTER-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,237, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed June 2l, 1887. Serial No. 242,006. (No model.) k
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. 'WARDALE residing near Manly Junction, in the county of Worth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Double Cutter Bar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel form of double cutter-bar for the finger-bars of reapers and mowers, the object of the invention being lo provide a double cutter-bar which will not clog, and one wherein the parts are so constructed that the cutters may be adjusted so as to operate in the most effective position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar tgures of lreference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved form of double cutter-bar. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line x x of Fig. 3. Fig.,3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line y y of Fig. 1, the outer guard being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating the connectionbetween the cutters and one of the cutterbars.
In constructing such a cutting apparatus as the one illustrated in the drawings above referred to I provide two cutters-bars, 10 and 11, to each of which cutter-bars there are connected a number of cutters, 12, each of said cutters being formed with slots 2, through which there are passed set-screws 3, by means of which the cutters are connected to the cutter-bars, the arrangement being such that as theinclined edges of the cutters are worn away by use and by being sharpened the cutters Amay be moved forward, so that their cuttingedges Will always operate inthe same relative position. These cutter-hars are placed face to face, and are mounted to slide in recesses that are formed in ringer-bars 13, the sections of said finger-bars being held together by tapbolts 14, which pass through elongatedapertures 15, that are formed in a spacing-strip, 16, that is placed between the two sections at the rear of the cutter-bars, the arrangement Y being such that by moving the spacing-strip 16 forward the cutting-edges of the cutters 12 may be kept in the required position.
To the ringer-bar 13 there are connected guard-fingers 17, the width of which is equal to the width of the cutters 12, and these guardfingers are so mounted that the space between them is equal to the width of the guard-fingers, and consequently to the width of the cutters. The guard-fingers 17 are held to the linger-bar 13 by bolts 5, which pass through the rearward-extending portions 18 of the guard-iingers and engage with the finger-bar, as indicated in Fig. 3. The inner or main shoe, 20, is a little more than double the width of the cutters, while the outer shoe or divider, 21, is
preferably one and a half times as wide as the v cutters, and this divider 21 is so shaped that it will gather the grass to the sickle-bars.
The track-clearer, which is shown at 50, is mounted in the rear of the divider 21, the shank ot' this track-clearer being formed withatransverse aperture, 3, and a vertical aperture, 4, these apertures being somewhat elongated. Through the aperture 3 there is passed a supporting-rod, 5*, while through the aperture ,4: there is passed a vertical rod, 6, springs 7 being arranged above and below the shank of the track-clearer and about the rod 6, and other springs, 8, (see Fig. 2,) are arranged upon each side of the shank ofthe track-clearer and about the rod 5,the arrangement being such that while the divider is yieldingly held in position it may be adjusted by means of the nuts 9, in which the ends of the rods 5 and 6 ride, said nuts being mounted in proper sockets that are formed in the guard 21.
In operation the usual reciprocating motion is imparted to the two cutter-bars by any of the ordinary eutter-bar-operatiug mechanisms in use.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with two cutter-bars IOO rod, one above and one below the clearer upon the vertical rod and one upon each side of the clearer upon the horizontal rod7 substantially as set forth.
5 3. The combination, with a finger-bar and a divider7 of the clearer having` its forward end pivotod and supported upon a horizontal rod to move from side to side and pivoted upon and guided by a vertical rod to slide up and Io down7 springs, two disposed upon each rod,
| one above aud one below the clearer upon the vertical rod and one upon each side of the clearer upon the horizontal rod, and the adj usting-screws working in the divider and bearing against the ends of the said horizontal and I5 vertical rods, substantially as seb forth.
