KEY AND noon FASTENER.
No. 588,758; Patented Aug. 24, 1897.
#TTOR/VEYS UNITED STATES PATENT EIGE.
CAROLINE E. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
KEY AND DOOR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,758, dated August 24, 1897. Application filed December 18, 1896- -Serial No. 616,134. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CAROLINE E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyand Door, Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in key and door fasteners, the object thereof being to provide an efficient means for fasten ing a door from the inside and to prevent unfastening of the same by the use of a skeleton key or otherinstrument inserted through the keyhole from the outside. The device is simple in construction and inexpensive and it can be readily attached to any door.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the disassembled parts of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the device attached to a door.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, a base-plate A, having screw-holes a therethrough and an extension a projected from one end thereof. To this said extension is pinned the plate B by means of a rivet or spindle b. This said plate has a slot 6 formed through the face or body portion thereof. Hinged to the outer end of this said plate is a swinging arm B, which is adapted .to engage with a sheath or bracket 0. The plate is further provided at about the center thereof with a forwardly and upwardly projecting tongue B adapted for contact with the end of a key, as will be hereinafter described.
In the use and operation of the device the base-plate A is secured to the door D upon a horizontal line bisecting the axis of the cir- I cular portione of the keyhole E, whereby when the plate B is placed in its locked position the head f of the key F will engage securely within the slot b of the plate B and the outer end of the said head will also bear upon the tongue 13*, whereby the key is securely fastened at right angles to the keyhole to prevent the removal thereof by external means. 1
As a still further security'against tampering with the key from the outside the arm B is brought into engagement with the bracket 0, which said bracket is screwed to the doorframe D. i
It is obvious that by the use of this device the possibility of .turning the key from the outside is entirely prevented, while at the same time it can be instantly and easily removed from contact with the key by simply swinging the plate B out of engagement therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined key and door fastener, comprising a base-plate adapted to be fastened to the door, and a swinging slotted plate adapted for engagement with the head of a key, and a swinging arm attached to the outer end of said plate and a bracket for engagement with said arm adapted to be fastened to a door-frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combined key and door fastener, the combination of the base-plate secured to the door and the swinging slotted plate having a tongue projected therefrom adapted to engage with the head of a door-key, and a swinging arm pivoted to the outer end of said plate, and a bracket for engagement with the said arm, which bracket is secured to the door-frame, substantially as'shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I 8 my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 17th day of December, 1896.
