JAMES r.. POOL, OF BROOKLYN, New YORK.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION formngpart of Letters Patent N 0. 588,755, dated August 24, 1897'.-
Application filed November 18,1895lv Serial No. 569,253. No model.)
To all whom it may concern: A p
Beit known that I, JAMES P IOOL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
By my invention I render the fire-chamber of an ordinary stove expansible, so that it may be enlarged or contracted, according as to whether it is desired to have alarge orsmall iire in the same, and thereby enable the user to regulate the amount of fuel used in accordance with the demand.
The invention consists in the various nove and peculiar arrangements and combinations of the several parts of the device, all as hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
I have illustrated types of my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a side viewof an Ordinary cooking-stove with the front end thereof shown partly in section, taken on a vertical plane. The dotted lines in this ligure show the limit of inward adjustment of the swinging grate, as hereinafter described. Fig. 2 shows in perspective the swinging grate with its adj usting-racks.
Referring to the drawings, in which-like numbers of reference indicate like parts throughout, 4 indicates an ordinary cookingstove, in the front end 5 of which is arranged a hre-chamber 6, with its subjacent ash-pit 7. The bottom of the fire-chamber is provided with an ordinary grate S, the front end of which is-upturnedvand extends part way up the front side of the fire-chamber, as clearly indicated in the drawings.
Within the lire-chamber 6, near the front wall thereof, I mount an adjustable grate 9,
which is adapted to be adjusted relatively to4 the back wall 10 of the dre-chamber, in order to enlarge or contract it and thereby regulate the fuel capacity of such chamber. In making this grate adjustable I preferably hinge it at its upper end, and to that end I provide its upper end with lugs or pintles 11 11, which take into suitable sockets and thereby enable the grate to be swung on its upper end. The lower end of the grate is provided with one or more pivoted adj Listing-racks 12, which are provided with downwardly-projecting teeth, and these racks extend through suitable openings 13 in the front of the stove and have their outer ends formed withvhandles, so that they can be grasped by the hand and readily pushed inwardly or drawn outwardly, the teeth on the under side of the racks engaging with the lower edge of the openings 13, through which they pass, and serving to hold the racks at any point of adjustment. The lower ends of the vertical bars 14 of this swingin g grate project free and extend between the bars of the. bottoln grate S, so that no matter what position the swinging grate may be adj usted in,the two grates will be practically closed on each other, so as not to leave a large opening between the two and through which the fuel might drop out. Of course any other suitable means for adjusting the swinging grate may be used instead, but the racks will be found to be a simple and durable means and I therefore prefer them.
It will be observed that by virtue of the peculiar construction of the swinging section of the lgrate the bottom grate may be readily freed of foreign matter by the swinging movement of the projecting ends of the movable grate.
It will now be readily understood that by adjusting the movable part or side of the firechamber as I have herein described and shown the capacity of the grate may be readily varied, so as to enable ittohold more or less fuel, and thus a large or small fire may be einployed, as the case may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stove having a fire-chamber provided with a bottom grate, a grate arranged at one side of the fire-chamber and hinged by its upper end so as to swing on a horizontal axis, said grate provided with members or projections in the presence of the two subscribing witextending into openings in said boi/coin grate nesses.
f' O" L 1011 ("1 "n0" and moi in@ L eely hioi.or sui o peniuos, and JAMES P POOL. means for adgusting said swinging giate on 5 its axis. YVtnesses:
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set VILLIS FOWLER,
my hand, this 24th day of September, 1896, SAMUEL M. CHESNUT.
